Djokovic, Nadal and Federer face the double duty of manic Thursday in Rome | ATP Tour

A blockbuster on Thursday at the Internazionali BNL d & # 39; Italy features Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, who will take the court for their first round matches in Rome. Due to Wednesday's rain that prevents tennis from being played, 20 individual matches will be held on Day 5 in an attempt to return to the calendar. All 10 remaining seeds must win two games on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals.

Djokovic, World No. 1, who claimed the Mutua Madrid Open title on Sunday, returns to Central Field to face Canada's #NextGenATP Denis Shapovalov. Federer plays his first match in Rome since 2016 against Portuguese Joao Sousa and defending champ Nadal hits the Tribune against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.

Djokovic defeated Shapovalov in his only previous meeting of FedEx ATP Head2Head at the Australian Open this year. The top seed tied Nadal's record of 33 Masters 1000 titles by beating last week in Madrid (v. Tsitsipas) and will have the opportunity to take sole possession of the record by securing the title on Sunday. Djokovic, four times champion in Rome, would also tie Federer's record "Big Titles" (54) with another win here. The winner of this match will return at night to face the Italian Marco Cecchinato or the German Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Federer won his only previous meeting of FedEx ATP Head2Head with Sousa on the courts of the Gerry Weber Open in 2014. Runner-up four times in Rome, he has a career record of 32-16 in this event. Federer quickly found his clay court form last week in Madrid by reaching the quarterfinals and having two match points against Dominic Thiem before losing in three sets. Sousa is looking for his fifth victory in the Top 10 and the first in clay. The winner of this match will face Borna Coric from Croatia, which is the thirteenth seed.

The second favorite, Nadal, begins his search for a ninth title in the Foro Italico. The defending champion leads his FedEx ATP Head2Head with Chardy 2-0, but they have not faced each other in four years. Nadal is still looking for his first title in 2019 after three consecutive semifinals during the European clay swing in Madrid, the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell and the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters. The Spaniard has not lost before the quarterfinals in Rome since 2008. The winner of this match will play against the Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, planted in the fourteenth position.

The seventh seed Del Potro had a tough loss in the first round last week in Madrid against Serbian Laslo Djere and their draw does not become easier this week against Goffin. The Argentine is competing in his third tournament of the year while caring for a fractured right kneecap held last October at the Rolex Shanghai Masters. Goffin leads his FedEx ATP Head2Head 3-1 and the Belgian showed he is in top form this week with his first round win over Stan Wawrinka. Del Potro or Goffin will play a third round match at night against Australian Nick Kyrgios or #NextGenATP Norweigian Casper Ruud.

Other notable matches in the second round of Thursday's calendar include Austrian Dominic Thiem, fifth favorite, against Spanish Fernando Verdasco, Japanese star Kei Nishikori, sixth head of combat, facing American qualifier Taylor Fritz and a #NextGenATP battle facing the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas of the eighth favorite against the Italian wild card by Jannik Sinner.
