National Treasure returns as a Disney + series, but this time a Latina will be the head of the adventure. Term announced Wednesday that the much-talked-about series has received the green light for a 10-episode season and will explore “current issues of identity, community, historical authorship and patriotism, told from the point of view of Jess Morales, a – old DREAMer who, with her diverse group of friends, embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover her mysterious family history and recover the lost treasure. “Speechless about who will play Jess yet, but at least we don’t have to deal with a character named Benjamin Franklin Gates again.
The series will be directed by Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding), and film producer Jerry Bruckheimer will serve as executive producer along with film writers Marianne and Cormac Wibberley. The Wibberleys will also be the main writers on the series. The rest of the writing team has yet to be announced. We I first heard about the series in May 2020, when Bruckheimer confirmed Collider that the production team was considering Disney + as the home of the television show.
Now Latinas (like the writer behind this article) will finally get the representation they deserve: someone who says “I’m going to steal the Declaration of Independence.”
