Daniel Cormier’s first statement after UFC 252: ‘Been the Helluva Ride’

Daniel Cormier said that in the immediate aftermath of his UFC 252 loss last Saturday, but now it seems he has officially closed the book on fighting again.

Cormier (22–3 MMA, 11–3 UFC) stated in the buildup of his trilogy remake with heavyweight champion Stipe Miosik (20–3 MMA, 14–3 UFC) that victory or defeat would likely be his final, and On Monday, he made a statement on Instagram in which he said that he is in retirement.

Cormier unanimously made a decision for Miocic at the UFC 252 Main Event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The fight was not without a little controversy though. Cormier accidentally eyes Miocic early in the fight. And in the third round, Miocic caught Cormier with an accidental eye hit that missed referee Mark Goddard. Cormier said he was later left without a sight.

Goddard eventually issued an apology recalling Prahar at the moment, but later saw it only on a replay. And UFC President Dana White said he did not think Cormier could use the strike as an excuse for harm. Cormier reportedly suffered a torn cornea, but would not require surgery.

Cormier leaves MMA as a rare two-division UFC champion. He won the light heavyweight title, then edged Miosic to win the heavyweight belt on his first meet. He then abandoned the 205-pound strap to focus on heavyweight.

After Miocic shut down Cormier to win back the belt in 2019, a trilogy rematch was set for this past Saturday.

Cormier competitive MMA is still best known for its furious rivalry with UFC Light Heavyweight Champion John Jones. Jones holds one win over Cormier and another when he was tested positive for banned substances.
