Dan Gainor: Successful ’60 Minutes’ Work On Gov. DeSantis Makes Clear The Press Fears It’s His Time


The race for the 2024 presidential election is on. You can tell because the leftist “60 Minutes” made up a big lie about one of the main Republican candidates.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was the latest victim of successful “journalism”. The once-reputed news magazine show spent three months on an investigation attempting to bring down one of the most successful governors of the COVID era.

Sunday’s show pulled out all the stops to attack DeSantis. He stated that the distribution of vaccines in Florida was “causing outrage.” That is always a code for the Democrats / journalists who are upset that everything was going well.

The ridiculously false story claimed that “Hollywood moguls, New York socialites, and tourists from abroad” were jumping others in line. Then, in one of the most outrageous lines seen on a “news” show, “60 Minutes” read, “Sounds like ‘The Hunger Games.’

Usually crazy comparisons like that come from one of the activists reporters interview to make their point. They are still emphasized, but this one came from correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi.

For those who have missed popular movies and books, “The Hunger Games” is about gladiatorial combat between children. Twenty-four of them try to kill each other and only one is supposed to survive.

So yeah, a little different than Florida’s vaccine policies.

Never mind, Alfonsi was heating up. The story showed her chasing the governor at a press conference and talking about his “pay to play” accusation. He accused the governor of working with Publix because of campaign contributions.

“Campaign finance reports obtained by ’60 Minutes’ show that weeks before the governor’s announcement, Publix donated $ 100,000 to its political action committee,” he explained. The show had Alfonsi playing cheat with DeSantis acting like she got the best of the exchange.

Nothing could be further from the truth, except, of course, the story of “60 Minutes”. CBS just cut the entire press conference where DeSantis proved them wrong. The governor went on to explain how Florida didn’t even start working with Publix initially. But when it came time to expand the state program, Publix was the company that stepped up.

Since the CBS report was based on a publicly available video it censored of the story, the bias did not remain hidden for long. Unsurprisingly, the Conservatives and Republicans were furious.

People on the right are angry at the biased media. Imagine.

The post-Trump news cycle is not as hyperactive as it has been in the past four years, so this journalistic disaster has staying power. The result has been horrible for CBS. Palm Beach County Democratic Mayor Dave Kerner didn’t just criticize “60 minutes.” He said his reports were “intentionally false.” He added: “’60 Minutes’ should be a shame.”

So far, “60 Minutes” expects the controversy to end. And most mainstream journalists long ago abandoned bizarre concepts like shame. A spokesperson for the network told DailyMail.com that the video was edited, “as we always do for clarity.” The Daily Mail didn’t give the name of the spokesperson, but I think it was a guy named Pinocchio.

Another CBS spokesperson issued a statement Tuesday defending the network’s story. “We requested an interview with Governor Ron DeSantis, he refused,” reads part of the statement. As if any sane person agrees to be part of a successful job like this. Almost humorously, CBS admitted: “Our story on Sunday night speaks for itself.” If it does. But what it says as much about “60 Minutes” as it is about journalism is not good.

For his part, DeSantis is getting the benefit of being a media target. Conservatives adored President Donald Trump every time he fought with the press. He was her gladiator. If CBS and the rest of the media put DeSantis in that role, voters will rally behind him faster than my skin would burn in the Florida sun.

DeSantis was on “Fox & Friends” Tuesday making the key point, that “many Americans no longer believe in corporate media for precisely this reason.” The reason he is referring to is that most of the major news organizations are left-wing activists, not neutral news providers.

Had they heard, CBS would have mentioned that Florida is covered by Publix stores and, as DeSantis put it, “it would be negligent not to use them as a distribution point.”

Hitting the media is a mix of baseball, soccer, and basketball for conservatives. It is a popular sport and it is never out of season. This “60 minute” story is why. To quote the governor, “they lie and they lie and they lie and they lie.”

The press spent all of 2020 promoting New York Governor Andrew Cuomo as the voice of the COVID-19 competition while criticizing DeSantis. It turns out that Cuomo was killing 15,000 people by sending infected patients to nursing homes and DeSantis was running his state competently without crushing its economy.

The journalists got it 100 percent backwards. I wonder why.
