The divergent paths of the pandemic on the two continents may be related in part to the much more successful vaccine deployment in the US and the spread of more contagious variants in Europe.
However, health experts in the US say that what is happening in Europe should serve as a warning not to ignore social distancing or remove other safeguards too soon.
“Each of these countries has had nadirs like the one we have now, and each took an upward trend after ignoring known mitigation strategies,” said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. US Diseases “They just took their eyes off the ball.”

Indoor eating restrictions eased in Tri-State
There will be big changes to indoor dining restrictions at restaurants throughout Tri-State Friday, including in Connecticut, where capacity limits will be removed entirely. Meanwhile, indoor dining capacity in New York City and New Jersey restaurants will expand to 50%, while the rest of New York will move to 75%.
Yankees and Mets to allow fans as COVID restrictions ease
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced some long-awaited news for sports fans in New York on Thursday, as coronavirus restrictions continue to ease. Beginning April 1, sports facilities with an indoor capacity of 1,500 or an outdoor capacity of 2,500 can reopen, which means it’s time to play ball. Indoor capacity will be limited to 10% and outdoor to 20%, so 8,384 fans can attend games at Citi Field and 10,850 at Yankee Stadium.

The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits rose last week to 770,000, a sign that layoffs remain high even as much of the US economy is steadily recovering from the coronavirus recession. Thursday’s report from the Labor Department showed jobless claims rose from 725,000 the previous week. The numbers have fallen sharply from the depths of the recession last spring, but still show that employers in some industries continue to lay off workers. Before the pandemic broke out, applications for unemployment assistance had never exceeded 700,000 in a week. The four-week average claims, which smooths out weekly variations, fell to 746,000, the lowest since late November.
Indoor fitness classes to resume, curfews lifted for some businesses
Governor Cuomo announced that indoor fitness classes, primarily in New York City, may reopen on Monday, March 22. He also announced that the 11pm curfew has been lifted for casinos, cinemas, bowling alleys, pool halls, gyms and fitness centers. The curfew for restaurants and bars remains in effect and will be re-evaluated “in April”.
New York cluster zones to be removed
Starting Monday, March 22, the last five yellow zone groups will be removed in New York, Governor Cuomo says. The remaining groups are in the East Bronx, West Bronx, Manhattan, Newburgh, New Windsor, Queens Kew Gardens, and Forest Hills.
