COVID NYC update: Vaccination site to open Abyssinian Church in Harlem amid supply shortages

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) – Appointments are solidly booked, as new COVID-19 vaccination sites open around New York City, but distribution is just part of the fight.

The need for these shots increases every day as a total of 32,725 deaths from coronovirus in New York have been reported since the epidemic began, with 1.2 million people tested positive and the current positivity rate exceeding 5%.

On Saturday, 500 seniors were vaccinated at NYCHA campuses.

And yet another vaccine site opens at noon in the Abyssinian Church of Harlem on Sunday.

Doses were also to be available at the Brooklyn Army Terminal, one of the five 24-hour mega sites opened by the city last week, but on Friday the site closed and gates were closed.

Those with appointments were turned away, while other appointments were canceled, as there was not enough vaccine. The city says it is asking state and federal officials to get there as soon as possible.

The state is receiving only a few hundred thousand doses because millions are now eligible.

Governor Andrew Quomo estimates that it may be until April before the vaccine reaches a critical mass.
