Press release from the Humboldt County Joint Information Center:
In the three-day weekend, an additional 131 cases of COVID-19 have been reported. A previously recorded case was determined to be duplicate, so the total number of county residents who tested positive now stands at 2,393.
The state recommended on Sunday that counties control a substantial portion of Modern’s COVID-19 vaccine. This represents about 90% of the many doses Humboldt County has on hand for new first doses that were to be scheduled this week. Health Officer Dr. Ian Hoffman called it a “very big setback” and said that no scheduled appointments have been postponed or canceled during this week, but the next line of groups for vaccination could be the most hit.
Dr. “The plan to expand vaccination clinics to people over the age of 75 has been delayed by this stagnation, and it is unclear how long it will last any longer,” Hoffman said. “People in this age group were beginning to be vaccinated by local providers, so we are working hard to get as many doses as possible available to minimize disruption as much as possible.” He added, “It is uniquely possible that a lot will be released for distribution and we can resume plans to vaccinate older adults, but we don’t know when that will happen.”
In related news, California’s Department of Public Health announced today that Humboldt County remains “purple” or broad-based under the state’s “blueprint for a safe economy” with an adjusted case rate of 17.7 and a positivity rate of 4.9% .
Dr. Hoffman said county residents should continue to follow COVID-19 safety measures, including covering the face, maintaining a distance of at least 6 feet from anyone outside the home, avoiding ceremonies and frequent hand washing is.
