Contestant with Down syndrome receives the spiritual prize of the contest

BURNSVILLE, Minn. (AP) – A 22-year-old woman became the first contestant with Down syndrome to compete in the Miss Minnesota USA contest.

Mikayla Holmgren received the spiritual award and the director's award on Sunday evening parade at the Ames Center in Burnsville. The audience gave Holmgren a standing ovation when she accepted the awards.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that the nomination letter for the spiritual award says that Holmgren is humble, puts others first and has the ability to overcome obstacles with a smile and enthusiasm in his heart Holmgren is from Marine in St. Croix.

Kalie Wright of Eagle Bend was named Miss Minnesota USA 2018.
