Comeback win baseball sweeps

PHOENIX – Andy Armstrong Y Troy claunch every home run and Jacob melton drove in the game-winning run in the eighth inning to send the Beavers to a 4-2 victory over the Grand Canyon at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark.

Oregon State’s victory sent the Beavers on a four-game series sweep. OSU also improved to 7-1 in the team’s eight-game trip to open the 2021 season.

The comeback victory marked the second of the Beavers series. OSU won the second game, 3-1, thanks to a three-run rally in the ninth inning on Friday night.

Armstrong drove a 2-2 pitch over the left-field wall to open the eighth inning, tying the game at two. Wade meckler he followed that up with his second hit of the game, a single, and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Melton then drove a 3-2 pitch to center for a run-scoring double to give the Beavers a one-run lead.

Claunch followed up with a solo shot in the ninth to give the Beavers a breather.

Claunch had three hits to control OSU’s 12 hit attack while Wade meckler Y Preston Jones each had two.

Meckler put the Beavers on the board first, thanks to a double that scored runs off the wall on the left in the second inning. Allowed Kyler mcmahan scoring from first after hitting a single to open inning.

Grand Canyon (3-5) evened the score on a Brock Burton groundout in the third, then took the lead, 2-1, when Juan Colato pinch-hitted a single in the sixth.

Oregon State Starter Will frisch he scattered three hits and one run in four innings. The right-hander walked three and struck out three. It was not in the decision.

Bryant salgado took the win, improving to 1-0 this season, after throwing two blank relief innings.

Frisch’s counterpart Carter Young worked five innings, allowing seven hits and one run with four strikeouts and two walks. Like Frisch, he was not in the decision.

Nick Hull, who allowed three hits and two runs in two innings, took the loss, falling to 0-1 this season.


Oregon State returns to Corvallis to open an 11-game homestay. The Beavers host BYU in a three-game series that begins Thursday night at 5:35 p.m. PST.

Headline finale in Phoenix

Oregon State Starting Pitchers – Kevin Abel, Cooper Hjerpe, Jake pfennigs Y Will frisch – combined to limit the Grand Canyon to 11 hits and two earned runs in 21 innings. The Lopes walked eight times to 20 strikeouts. For the year, OSU’s starting staff has limited opponents to 27 hits and nine earned runs in 40 1/3 innings, an average of 1.79 earned runs.

15-match streak
Kyler mcmahan extended his hitting streak to 15 games with an infield single in the second. He later noted when Wade meckler bent to the left.

Almost his second
Andy Armstrong The home run in the eighth inning was the first of the season, but it very well could have been the second. The senior hit a deep fly to the left in the sixth that was caught at the base of the fence.
