The Blue Jackets and Jets have completed a blockbuster trade to swap disgruntled stars as winger Patrick Laine is heading to Columbus while center Pierre-Luc DuBois lands in Winnipeg.
Columbus native forward Jack Roslovic also heads the Blue Jackets as part of the deal. Columbus is sending its 2022 third round pick to Winnipeg.
The 22-year-old DuBois signed a two-year, $ 10 million contract extension before training camp, although sources confirmed to ESPN that he also told management during negotiations that he wanted to trade. The No. 3 pick of the 2016 draft – Columbus GM Jarmo Cacalen was not in a hurry to move Dubos – preferred to wait until he could make the best return. However, the situation escalated after the first period on Thursday with Blue Jackets coach John Tortella Dubois.
“He hasn’t given a reason why he wants to leave,” Tortella told 97.1 The Fan last week. “He should get in front of it. That’s the way I think you should go about your business, and you can be the best team.”
Laine, who was selected at No. 2 of the 2016 draft, had since been a rumored trade candidate, as his agent told TSN that it would be “mutually beneficial” for both sides to get a fresh start.
“I’m here, I’m not,” Laine told reporters ahead of the season, noting the request.
The 22-year-old Finnish winger had 28 goals and 35 players in over 68 games in 2019-20, and he had two goals and one assist in the first game of 2020-21.
Since their debut in 2016–17, only eight players (Alex Ovechkin, Auston Matthews, David Pasternak, Nikita Kucharov, Conor McDavid, Leon Dracipital, John Tavares and Patrick Kane have scored over 140 goals for Laine.
“Strengthening our lineup is a priority for us and the achievements of Patrick Laine and Jack Roslovic,” Keckelainen said in a statement. “Patrick is a player we know very well and has become one of the most efficient scorers in our league in no time. Jack is an exciting young player who is of great caliber and we see him in the Blue Jackets As thrilled to bring it home in Columbus. “
Laine is currently on injured reserve with an upper body injury. He is in the final year of a two-year bridge deal, earning him $ 6.75 million a year. According to the team, the Jets will retain 26% of the line’s salary.
The Blue Jackets announced that they had reached a two-year, $ 3.8 million contract with Roslovic through the 2021–22 season.
According to Canadian quarantine rules, DuBois would have to remain isolated for 14 days and miss a minimum of seven games. DuBois has 66 goals and 93 assists for 159 points in 239 career games.
