Cohoes tries to comprehend impact of devastating downtown blaze

COHOES – A day after firefighters scrambled to stop a roaring inferno as it mercilessly spread from one downtown building to another, they spread out Friday to badess the magnitude of the damage.

It was stark: 32 buildings were destroyed or damaged. The cost is expected to be in the millions of dollars.

The blaze was unlike anything seen in years:  Firefighters tried to keep ahead of the spreading flames. Embers from the old, dry buildings drifted to nearby structures around Remsen Street, spreading flames that ignited other structures.

"I have seen fires start in a little spot in the house where the person tried to put it out, and by the time firefighters get there, four rooms are burning," said Cohoes Mayor Shawn Morse, who has been a firefighter for 26 years. "It starts because mother nature and fire combined at times make it almost impossible to get ahead of it."

The fire started at 228 Remsen Street. Authorities said John A. Gomes, 51, who lived there, was using a burn barrel to imitate something he saw on a television show about forging steel.

The combination of old buildings nestled within inches of one another and 30 mph winds made it difficult to contain the conflagration.

"You have close buildings, you have balloon construction, you have the wind, you have a lot of different variables," Morse said. "Now we know that a small fire gets out of hand and becomes a big fire, and we've got millions of dollars in damage and three blocks of destruction."

The air hung heavy Friday with the smell of the smoke rising off the still smoldering buildings in the heart of the city's downtown. Firefighters kept watch over the blackened wreckage that threatened to reignite.

Bethany Bejian and Mike Ferris, who lived a second-floor apartment at 226 Remsen St., recounted rushing to flee as flames shot in from a back porch. "We just moved in a week and a half ago," said Bejian. "Everything we had was in there."

The couple did save their dogs, Jackson and Zeus, but lost a pet cat who could not be found during the "minute and a half" that the couple had before having to run. And, when Ferris earlier Friday had searched through debris, he about $80 in miraculously unburned currency inside the scorched remains of his dresser drawer.

He said the currency now is in possession of city police as evidence from the fire, but that he expected to get it back shortly. "We will probably have to use it to put some clothes on my stepson," said Ferris.

A spokesman for Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office said the state prepared to send aid to help the city.

Major fires have burned in the city before. A 1988 blaze destroyed 42 business in the commercial district and damaged 19 more.

In recent years, the downtown area has become a focus for redevelopment. The city got to work on the Cohoes Music Hall on upper Remsen Street. Morse said 228 Remsen – a property reduced to a pile of bricks – was poised for commercial redevelopment on the first floor.

Remsen Street resident Matt Eisler-Monti and husband, Paul Eisler-Monti, were displaced by the fire, but remained optimistic about the city's future.

"Before the fire, I was seeing a lot of improvement on buildings and it was getting really nice," said Matt Eisler-Monti said, who for four years lived in an apartment above Rizzo's House of Flowers at 233 Remsen St.

"It might set it back a bit, but not for very long," Paul Eisler-Monti said.

The damage was concentrated mostly on the 200 block of Remsen Street around where the fire started. The wind-lifted embers damage buildings further down, including homes on Main, Columbia, Howard and Main streets. The embers also caused widespread damage to Smith's restaurant and Yuahn Sushi on Remsen Street.

Pioneer Bank on Friday announced it would be accepting monetary donations at all 22 branches in the Capital Region to support the Cohoes Fire Relief efforts. The bank recently opened a branch at 100 Mohawk Street. U-Haul promised to give residents left homeless by the blaze a place to store whatever they could salvage.

"This fire may slow us down for a short period of time, but with every tragedy there is an opportunity, and so we believe we'll just continue to move forward every day and try and rebuild and bring more economic development," Morse said.

But still, Thursday's fire shocked the men and women who battled the flames. Chief Joseph Fahd said it will probably take until next week for investigators to determine exactly how many buildings were affected.

The inferno displaced at least 20 people. A firefighter was taken to the hospital for dehydration and heat exhaustion. No other injuries were reported.

While many Cohoes residents said they were shocked by how the fire started, Gomes' teenage son came to his father's defense on Facebook.

"My father John Gomes didn't mean to burn his house down," John Gomes, 16, wrote, urging people to withhold judgment. He explained that his family lost nearly everything they own and friends encouraged him to keep his spirits up. In a reply to a friend, Gomes wrote "at the end of the day, I'm defending my family no matter what."

The elder Gomes was charged with felony counts of reckless endangerment and arson. Morse said Gomes was using the flames in the barrel to bend metal in an attempt to mimic the History Channel television series "Forged in Fire" about bladesmithing.

Matt Eisler-Monti said flames billowed in front of her apartment window Thursday and she, her husband and pets were evacuated.

"He should know better than to do that near a home in a city," Matt Eisler-Monti said of the elder Gomes. "I don't know what we would do if we lost our apartment. I'm just glad we're OK."

Gomes was jailed on $15,000 bail, which he has since made, said his lawyer Christopher Ritchey of the Albany County Public Defenders' Office.

"My client is a father of two and a hard-working plumber," Ritchey said. "This was an unfortunate, terrible accident, not a crime."
