Clint Frazier knows that a victory and a home run will not make up for the way 2018 ended for the Yankees, with a loss to the Red Sox in ALDS.
But on Tuesday, he and the Yankees had at least a good start against Boston, when Frazier hit a home run against Chris Sale that helped open an 8-0 victory in the Bronx.
"It was huge," said Frazier. "Rivalry is what it is. For us, it is important to get a victory against whoever we are playing. We know that the last time you were here, you gave us a beating to go to the World Series. It's a good feeling to know we have them tonight. "
A solo victory in April barely makes up for a season-ending loss in the playoffs, but the Yankees were desperate for a win, especially since so much of their season has pbaded. Homers of Frazier and Mike Tauchman, both in the majors due to the injuries that have decimated the lineup of the Yankees, played an important role in the victory.
For Frazier, the shot to lead the bottom of the quarter came after he had fought on the plate recently. He entered the game only 2-for-16 with no extra-base hits, one base on balls and six strikeouts in his previous five games, and fell short on his first at-bat.
Frazier was going to slow down after a torrid stretch of three games that went from Baltimore to Houston a little over a week ago, when he went 7-for-11 with three homers. On Tuesday, Frazier hit fifth, as manager Aaron Boone looks for the offense anywhere he can get it.
And Frazier surrendered with his fourth homer of the season, a flying ball that has just reached the center of the right. Frazier admitted that he did not think he had enough.
"I was watching Mookie [Betts] "Frazier said about the Red Sox center fielder," I was really happy he left. "
If the Yankees are going to survive the absence of the outfielders like Aaron Hicks (back) and Giancarlo Stanton (biceps), Frazier will have to produce constantly, and he knows it.
"I'm happy to be out here, having the opportunity to play every day," said Frazier. "I feel much more comfortable in the box, and when I'm successful, it's fun, as long as I continue to play at bat and continue to build that, I will play at a high level, hopefully."
