A recent study, published in Communications of natureClimate change and the fusion of permafrost in the Arctic is going to be a costly issue for us. He came to the conclusion that, globally, it will cost us $ 70 trillion.
Like the vicious circle of global warming, carbon is released into the atmosphere due to the increasing loss of Arctic permafrost that occurs due to the increase in temperature on Earth. It's going to be a costly consequence if we do not find a way to rectify the changes.
This study also mentions that even if we follow the Suggested proposals According to the Paris Agreement, to maintain the increase in global temperatures in this century within 1.5 degrees Celsius, there will still be a cost. However, it will be much smaller than this estimate.
This study has revealed that the thawing of permafrost in the lakes of Alaska has been releasing 12 times more nitrous oxide than previously estimated. Nitrous oxide is another global warming gas, but it is almost 300 times more potent to trap heat than carbon dioxide. The ozone layer also dissolves.
"With climate change, we are conducting a high-risk experiment in which we do not know what is coming," says study co-author Kevin Schaefer. "The most important thing to remember about our study is that the greater the warming, the stronger the comments and the higher the costs to society," he added.
Schaefer says that we are already experiencing the impacts and costs of climate change.
Permafrost and loss of albedo (reflectivity of a surface) are the only two reactions through which we can estimate the cost, at this point.
