Children transmit coronaviruses, the Utah study suggests, but do not become ill themselves

WASHINGTON – A new study of childcare centers in Utah, run by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Show, can transmit coronoviruses to children, but they themselves do not get sick.

The new findings come from Friday, previous research on childhood infections, and extensive contract tracing at three daycare centers in Salt Lake City between April 1 and July 10. These findings may help shape an in-depth debate about reopening schools safely. The coronovirus shakes thousands and kills hundreds daily.

President Trump has called on schools to reopen in-person instruction, pointing to studies that show that children are not sick with coronaviruses. But teachers and powerful unions represent, as well as many Democratic legislators, that they have not found enough resources to return to the classroom.

In many parts of the country, schools have closed online classes.

Utah’s findings offered mixed results, at least as far as the youngest children are concerned. The average age of the children at the three childcare centers was 7.. Earlier studies have found that children under the age of 10 become ill and spread the virus less often than their older counterparts.

A total of 184 people either worked at one of the three childcare centers, attended a center or were in very close contact such as parents, spouses, or siblings.

Finally thirteen children tested positive for coronavirus. However, according to the study, COVID-19 had “mild or no symptoms at all”. Three had no symptoms.

Those children spread the virus outside the childcare center’s environment to at least 12 people. Of these external cases, six were mothers of infected children, while another three were brothers or sisters. One mother had to be hospitalized. Her baby was one of the malignant coronovirus carriers. One in three asymptomatic children also transmitted the virus.

In particular, 71 percent of the cases were confined to adults and children within the three childcare centers. But in one case, an 8-month-old baby transferred the coronovirus to both of its parents.

Temperatures were checked at all three daycare centers. But only two centers required adults to wear masks. The third – referred to in the report as “Facility C” – was by far the largest of the three, and required neither masks of children nor adults. Of the 84 people there, 15 became ill.

According to the CDC study’s conclusion, “COVID-19 is less severe in children than in adults, but children may still play a role in transmission.”

Ongoing research suggests that COVID-19 infection can have potentially long-term effects on the heart and other organs, even in patients who have had mild or asymptomatic cases. It is not known whether these effects can appear in children and how.

The CDC also recommends the use of face masks “especially among staff members, especially when children are too young to wear masks.”

The president has reduced the mask’s efficacy, and refused to order a national mask mandate.
