Add CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus to the checklist of TV executives who badume the rationale for a decline in rankings this season is as a result of there’s an excessive amount of soccer on TV.

Even robust McManus’ community airs video games on Thursdays, together with the NFL Network, he stated these could possibly be hurting the product.

“I do think it’s clear that adding 10 games to the Thursday night package and two additional Sunday morning London games has clearly diluted the Sunday afternoon packages and affected the ratings. It’s just simple mathematics,” McManus instructed the Wall Street Journal.

This appears to be the brand new narrative for why soccer rankings are down. What the executives aren’t speaking about is how streaming and a youthful viewing viewers are coming into play. And they aren’t blaming the weekly participant protests, both.

Speaking on the Paley International Council Summit in New York final week, Fox CEO James Murdoch stated that there’s an “overproliferation” of video games, significantly because the league expanded Thursday Night Football, and that the rankings are “soft.”

“There’s a query mark for the NFL, which is simply to badume arduous about how they’re licensing,” Murdoch said in his keynote address. “So I do badume the proliferation of Thursday availability, and the proliferation of soccer typically, does imply that you simply’re asking loads from clients to look at Thursday.

“And then they watch a lot more college football games on Saturdays, and then on Sundays, and then on Monday Night Football, etc. It’s a lot. So I do think that preserving the scarcity value of those events and that audience is something that is worth thinking about.”

Michael Mulvihill, govt vice chairman of badysis at Fox, instructed the Wall Street Journal that the political problem of the day would not appear to be affecting the rankings.

“The anthem protests have been much less an element than some individuals have claimed,” Mulvihill stated. “Even though [Mr. Trump] elevated the issue, you haven’t seen a negative impact.”

Overall, rankings for NFL video games are down 5%, with solely Monday Night Football on ESPN and the Thursday Night Games on CBS and the NFL Network seeing a rise. Taking the most important hits are the Sunday afternoon video games on CBS and Fox, with the Sunday Night sport on NBC down barely.

CNN reported final week, citing info from Nielsen, that whereas NFL rankings are down, it could be due to a pattern in TV viewership. According to the report, NBC common prime-time viewers is down four%, CBS is down 6%, ABC is down 11%, and Fox is down 20% by the primary month of the brand new season.

Sports Business Journal reported that for the reason that fall TV season opened on Sept. 25, NFL sport viewership is 2.5 occasions greater than broadcast prime-time viewership. And, 17 of the highest 20 exhibits which have aired for the reason that begin of soccer season are soccer sport protection. Also, in response to Standard Media Index, cash spent on promoting throughout NFL video games elevated by 2% in September.
