In six magazines of water resources and water resources published in 2017, the percentage of inspections totally included was only 0.06 to 6.8 per cent. There is not a low level of unusual replication in water-water surveys – fact that many scientists know. However, a team of researchers at the Utah State University could have been solved to make these surveys more streamlined.
In their paper, "Data assessment available and research revival in irrigation and water resources," published February 26 in Scientific Data Nature, co-authors David Rosenberg an online search tool to evaluate the replication of a published research. The team reviewed 360 articles from six magazines of water resources published in 2017. Out of 360 articles, they can only make the results out of four articles.
"Our search tool is to break down the scientific replication concept into specific components of data capture, replication of results and reappearance of results," said Rosenberg, professor associated with USU civil and environmental engineering. "We are then recommending how authors, magazines, funders and survey machine centers can use to increase the low levels of reproduction."
The authors say that production is capable of breaking it into three parts:
- Are the data, models, code, instructions for use and other materials used in the work available?
- Can work tools be used to produce published results?
- Can the results be represented with new color colors?
The team's online survey engine includes 15 questions and a & # 39; Provide a list of scrutiny of the essential items required for the & # 39; receiving artifact and product revival. The Artifacts are the term for each data, software, models, code, guidance and other materials that are required to produce results within a survey.
The team found that around 70 per cent of the sample articles stated that some materials were available but only 48 per cent of the materials were available online. Only about six of the articles confirmed were out of the & # 39; making publicly available material, and only one of the quantities of sampled articles has been produced; making materials and they were completely replicated.
The authors said that many articles were needed in order to generate results. If authors give instructions, they say, the number of possible articles could be proven to be reproduced. Articles that made every sex available at six in 10 had the chance that some of their products would be reproduced. Two magazines that were scrutinized by the articles team needed to indicate how access could be used, and four episodes inspired statements. Journalists did not need to do all the instruments.
The survey device can help writers to identify and encourage some degree of clarity. For example, authors can use the survey tool to self-evaluate the their own results. Rosenberg and his team also propose a base system to identify different levels of replication:
- Bronze Medal: Everything is available within the article or in open spaces
- Silver Medal: All the tools are available and the results are fully depicted
- Gold Medal: The results are fully reproduced and general results can be represented in different situations with the same different objects or differences
Rosenberg recommends that assessment images be distributed alongside online articles to identify authors for their replication and easier for readers to find high-quality reproductions. Rosenberg and his team gave four silver coins and six bronze medals out of the 360 articles they reviewed. Gold medals for the recycling of the products continues to be a crucial line of output; work in the future.
"We hope the survey tool will help authors, magazines, funders and institutions to make scientific work more impossible," said Rosenberg. "We welcome a debate to improve the survey machine and to develop science re-production."
