California GOP will not obey order on unofficial ballot drop box

The California Republican Party said it would not comply with an order from Sacramento to remove the unofficial ballot drop box it had distributed across the state.

Party spokesman Hector Barajas told California Secretary of State Alex Padilla (D), “We are going to continue this program. If he wants to take us to court, we will see him in court.” .

In a follow-up letter to Padilla, the California GOP said it distributed similar boxes during primaries earlier this year “without incident or objection from your office.”

The California Republican Party continued the deadlock amid ongoing fights over how to collect the ballot.

State law allows the practice of “harvesting ballots”, or collecting multiple ballots to be presented to election officials. But officials say the drop box distributed by the state party has been incorrectly marked as “official” and lacks the necessary anti-tamper protection.

“These unauthorized drop boxes are a disservice to state and local election administrators who have worked on the appointment and deployment of official ballot drop boxes,” Padilla said at a news conference on Monday.

Republicans accused the state government of trying to suppress the GOP votes, as officials issued a cease-fire order to remove the box, with Baraj saying Monday that “democratic anger is excessive.”

“If the Democrats are concerned with the ballot harvesting, they are the ones who wrote the law, Jerry Brown of the vote and signed into law,” he said.
