12:40 pm: Right-handed Patrick Weigel and Chad Sobotka They go to the Brewers in exchange for Arcia, tweets Mark Bowman of MLB.com.
12:09 pm: Milwaukee will receive a pair of pitchers in exchange for Arcia, tweets Hey man.
12:01 pm: The Braves are ready to acquire Arcia, tweets Ken Rosenthal from The Athletic.
11:58 am: The Brewers are “in talks” about an early-season trade involving the shortstop. Orlando arcia, reports MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (via Twitter). A possible landing spot for the 26-year-old former top prospect is still unclear, but FanSided’s Robert Murray tweets that the Brewers have agreed to trade Arcia to another club.
While it’s a bit surprising to see a major trade so early in the season, Arcia’s role with the Brewers has waned in recent years. The hope at one point was that he would be the short-term long-term answer, but Luis Urias He now appears to be the preferred option at that position for the Brew Crew. Arcia has seen some time at third base this year too, but Travis shaw made the Brewers Opening Day roster and is expected to serve as the top pick in the hot corner.
Arcia has had a 1-for-11 start to his 2021 season, but had perhaps the best performance of his career last summer when he dropped .260 / .317 / .416 in 189 plate appearances. That said, it’s somewhat disappointing that that production represents the best performance of his career for Arcia, given that he once ranked in the top 10 overall prospects in baseball on both Baseball America and MLB.com. Arcia’s glove always gave him a decent floor, but his bat just didn’t turn out as expected. Through 1876 plate appearances at the Major League level, he has managed just a .244 / .293 / .364 batting line with 42 home runs and 39 steals.
Obviously, the Braves don’t need a shortstop every day. Dansby swanson He’s got the position locked out, but Arcia gives them a utility option with a solid glove. He has 4,250 innings in his career as a shortstop, so it’s no surprise Atlanta is comfortable sliding him to second or third base.
Ehire Adrianza he had been playing that role at the club, although there is some uncertainty surrounding his status at the moment. Adrianza recently left the club to attend to a personal matter and was reportedly in the process of going through admissions tests to return to the club. However, the MLB.com transaction log indicates that Adrianza has been placed on the restricted list (the club has yet to formally announce as much) which would suggest a longer absence due to non-medical reasons.
Arcia joins Johan Camargo and Pablo Sandoval as utility options from the bench for captain Brian Snitker, although it seems unlikely the Braves will carry all three players simultaneously. Both Arcia and Camargo have a minor league option remaining. Arcia is the more expensive of the two, with a salary of $ 2 million compared to Camargo’s $ 1.36 million, and it would be logical that if the Braves gave up some young pitchers to acquire him, he would get the go-ahead.
Depending on how things play out for Arcia in Atlanta, he could be an option for them not just in 2021 but in 2022. He currently has more than four years of major league service, which means he will be controllable through the 2022 season through through arbitration.
More to come.
