Boy shot in head in possible Chicago road rage incident

A young child was shot in the head during an apparent road rage incident on Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive, police said.

The shooting around 11 am Tuesday occurred after an incident “escalated into gunfire for about two blocks,” Police Commander Jake Alderden said at a news conference.

The 21-month-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was in intensive care at Lurie Children’s Hospital.

“We are doing everything possible for this child and thank everyone for their concern,” said Dr. Marcelo Malakooti, associate medical director of the hospital and medical director of the pediatric intensive care unit, on Tuesday.

The car the boy was in later crashed and a Good Samaritan stopped to help, Alderden said. Police said the driver took the boy and a female passenger to a hospital.

Police said one person was being questioned, but no arrests have been announced.

Alderden said it was unclear what triggered the incident.

“Right now, it seems like they are completely unfamiliar to each other, and possibly there was a dispute over someone, you know, for not dropping anyone in a lane of traffic,” he told a news conference.

Alderden said a gun was recovered from someone in the car with the boy, but police did not know if it had been shot and were investigating.

Family members said the boy’s condition has improved, but he is not out of the woods yet, NBC Chicago reported.
