Severe weather has led to the cancellation of more than 150 blood donations in the area, and the need for blood donors is excellent, according to the American Red Cross.
The agency estimates that more than 5,500 blood donations have not been collected. This adds to the effect of seasonal illnesses, such as the flu, and hectic holidays that collectively contribute more than 28,000 donations less than was needed in November and December, the Red Cross said in a statement.
All blood types are needed, but there is a critical need for:
* Type O negative: the type of blood that can be transfused to almost everyone and is what doctors turn to in situations of trauma.
* Type B negative: type blood that can be transfused to Rh negative and type B patients.
Eligible donors can find blood donation opportunities and schedule an appointment to donate using the free Blood Donor application, by visiting redcrossblood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
