Washington – Coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, Drs. Deborah Birks warned on Sunday that Americans who travel for the Thanksgiving holiday and attend large gatherings must admit they were infected with COVID-19 and be tested within the next few days.
“We know people may have made mistakes over the Thanksgiving time period,” Birks said in an interview with “Face the Nation”. “If you are young and you have gathered, you need to be tested about five to 10 days later. But you need to assume that you are infected and without a mask from your grandparents and aunts and other people Don’t go near. “
Birks also said that it is important to avoid comradeship with others.
At the run-up to Thanksgiving, public health experts urged Americans to pursue larger family celebrations amid the latest surge of coronovirus infections. There have been more than 13.2 million confirmed cases of coronavirus in the US and over 266,000 Americans have died of COVID-19.
In response to the spike in coronavirus cases and increased hospitalizations, some governors and mayors have begun re-enforcing restrictions on businesses and restaurants to reduce prevalence. However, others still avoided enforcing the façade mandate and are allowing bars and restaurants to remain open with some restrictions.
Birks said that in places where there are no mitigation measures, individual Americans have to step in to protect themselves and their families.
“For every American, this is the moment to protect yourself and your family,” she said. “So if your governor or your mayor is not doing the policies that we know are important – masking, physical disturbances, avoiding bars, avoiding crowded indoor areas – if those restrictions don’t exist in your state, So you need to take it to get yourself banned. You don’t need to go to these places. You need to protect your family now. “
Birks insisted that mask requirements have been proven effective in dealing with the spread of coronovirus, but noted public health experts are “deeply concerned about what might happen” with infection rates after Thanksgiving.
Dealing with the coronavirus epidemic has been oneJoe Biden and his team for the presidential election, and the leaders of his coronavirus advisory board, have begun attending briefings with federal agencies to better prepare to deal with the epidemic after Mr. Biden was sworn in.
Birks said she expects the incoming Biden administration to begin briefing from Monday, adding that they begin investigating data compiled by the federal government on the spread of coronovirus infection and the virus.
“One thing we’ll bring to the Biden administration in that discussion is to understand how they want to see the data because the data isn’t useful if it’s not actionable,” she said. “And each group needs to see how it moves them to action.”
Still, the Trump administration is helming the federal government as of Jan. 20, and Birks said she is briefing Vice President Mike Pence daily. However, he did not say when he last gave information to President Trump.
