The comments attributed to Dodd have drawn condemnation, particularly from influential Democratic women who ensure that Harris is being held to a standard that would not apply to a man running for president.
The debate-stage skirmish was one of the seminal moments of the Democratic primary. Harris, who is black, said Biden made “very painful” comments about his past work with separatists’ senators when he voiced his opposition to the bus for integrating schools.
“There was a little girl in California who was part of the second grade to integrate her public schools, and she went to school every day,” she said. “And that little girl was me.”
At the time, Biden called his comments “an incorrect portrayal of my position”.
Their relationship has become very cordial.
Biden publicly praised Harris several times and noted that he had given much thought personally and professionally since he became close to his late son Bue Biden when he was the state’s attorney general.
It is common for high-profile politicians to take notes with them to the podium, either as a handwritten addition to a formal comment or to a bullet-point list such as Biden on the stationery that bears his full name: Joseph R. Biden Jr.
In early March, in the coronavirus virus epidemic, President Donald Trump’s notes were photographed to show “Chinese” written on “corona”, part of the president’s efforts to blame the epidemic on a foreign adversary. Last year, as Trump faced impeachment to help Ukraine officials find dirt on Biden, the president read the notes: “I don’t want anything” and “I have no quid pro needed.”
Biden’s list, at least, suggests that he wants to define any tension around his relationship with Harris. As reflected in his notes, Harris has become a reliable surrogate for Biden, appearing alongside him in the online fundraising amid unusual social disturbance standards forced on the campaign by the COVID-19 epidemic. As recently as last week, Harris headlined her own program for Biden, one focused on the Raleigh area of North Carolina, a battleground where Harris was elected to black voters and college-educated white women Dual appeals could increase Democrats’ chances.
Biden ultimately did not specifically pose a question about Harris. A Harris spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
At his third extended news conference in four months, Biden also deflected specific questions about the timing of his decision on a running buddy, an approach reflected in another entry on Biden’s notepad. Under the title “VP”, Biden wrote “Highly Qualified” and “Miscellaneous Group”, indicating his intention not to delve into more details.
Beyond the Vice President’s politics, Biden’s subjects included the Justice Department, an illusion to Attorney General William Burr, who testified Tuesday on Capitol Hill. His notes did not name Barr, but Biden referenced “people’s lawyer … not the president’s lawyer”, an echo of his previous statements that Barr used his term as the latter.
On the “final 100 days” of the campaign, Biden wrote that he would “offer the most obvious contrast,” “tell the truth,” “take responsibility” and “listen to the scientists” – all laugh at Trump.
The list also included the original three-part slogan of Biden’s campaign: “restore the soul of the nation”, “rebuild the MC” (middle class) and “united country.”
