Biden team prepares push for trillions of new COVID relief bill

President-Elect Joe Biden’s Coronavirus economic relief package is expected to cost trillions, and on Tuesday, transition officials briefed Democratic congressional staffers about their priorities for a massive stimulus bill, two people said. I told CBS News.

Elements of the package, considered “important” by Mr. Biden, include a $ 2,000 stimulus payment for Americans, more money for cities and states to boost their response to COVID-19 and improve vaccine delivery and more funding for schools Providing is included.

Mr Biden also wants to see a further expansion and increased unemployment insurance payments, which were extended last month and are currently scheduled to run through mid-March.

How will Biden convince Congress to pass this bill?

The Biden White House is seeking bipartisan support for its COVID-relief package, which could mean a significant change in legislation to attract more Republican support. The target was also reported to Congress colleagues on Tuesday.

If Mr. Biden cannot make a deal with Senate Republicans, the package may pass under reconciliation, a process sometimes used for spending measures. Under this approach, only a simple majority would be required to pass this bill and would not be subject to being blocked by a filmmaker. Most Senate bills require 60 votes to be removed from a film list. This option would only be used to pass the Biden team structure with Democratic votes. Once the Georgia Senate election results are certified, there will be a 50-50 split between Democrats and Republicans in the Senate and Kamla Harris will be elected Vice President. With Harris as the 51st vote, Democrats will control the Senate.

President-elect Biden is expected to outline his COVID-relief proposal on Thursday. On Wednesday, a Biden transition official did not respond when asked for comment.

The legislation is likely to face intense lobbying by members of Congress and special interests, which may affect the final price tag.

Some elements of the law, such as the $ 2,000 stimulus payment for Americans, already have bipartisan support. Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida sent a letter Tuesday asking Mr. Biden to include a larger investigation. The president-elect has now called for a $ 2,000 check for weeks and campaigned on the issue in Georgia ahead of the Jan. 5 election to the Senate.

Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts sent a 15-page letter to Biden transition officials leading the COVID-19 response, calling for greater oversight of the federal government’s response to the pandemic. Warren wants to see an increase in data collection and reporting of locations with frequent COVID-19 groups, including aid collection centers and behavioral medicine clinics.

The incoming administration is seeking input on legislation from state and local leaders. Biden employees have been in “listening mode” with the offices of various governors to receive their assessments of the COVID-19 response from the federal government. An official in the Democratic governor’s office told CBS News, “We have a different sense of attention than prior administrations and they are proactive about working closely with states.”

Named Javier Becerra, Secretary of Health and Human Services, Drs. Along with Vivek Murthy, who has been named as Surgeon General, and head of the COVID Equity Task Force, Drs. Marcella Nunez-Smith also recently met with a dozen faith leaders who led religious groups with millions of members to discuss the same federal response in communities of color.

Participants in the two meetings told CBS News that the group discussed using faith-based hospitals and clinics to increase access and trust in the COVID-19 vaccine, most notably with “Pharmacy Desert”. Specific plans to reach Americans suspected of the vaccine were not outlined by the Biden team, two faith leaders told CBS News, but both said they were encouraged by the discussion.

A faith leader told CBS News that his network plans to lobby the Biden team to extend the child tax credit.
