Biden Says Gov. Andrew Cuomo Should Resign If Allegations Are Confirmed In Investigation

WASHINGTON – President Biden said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo should resign if an investigation confirms allegations of misconduct against him by multiple women.

Biden said in an interview with ABC News that he also thought Cuomo “will likely end up being prosecuted” if the investigation confirms the allegations. The comments were the loudest yet from Biden, who has been a political ally of the New York governor.

Three women who worked for Mr. Cuomo and a woman who is currently on his staff accused him of sexual harassment or inappropriate conduct. Attorney General Letitia James is overseeing an investigation into the allegations. Several prominent New York Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, have called on Cuomo to resign.

Cuomo has said that he never touched anyone inappropriately. He had previously apologized to anyone who said his behavior made them uncomfortable.

Biden said in the ABC interview, which will air in its entirety Wednesday, that the investigation should determine the veracity of the claims: “That is what is happening now.” He said it was up to others to determine whether Mr. Cuomo can be effective as governor at this time.

He added: “There could be a criminal proceeding attached. I do not know “.

Biden said that generally “a woman should be assumed to be telling the truth and not made a scapegoat and a victim of her presentation.” He said that “it takes a lot of courage to come forward. So they are presumed to be taken seriously. And it should be investigated. And that’s what’s going on now. “

Spokesmen for the governor did not immediately return emails seeking comment.

Mr. Cuomo has said that people should hold trial until Ms. James’s investigation is complete. Biden told reporters on Sunday: “I think the investigation is underway and we should see what it brings us.”

As a presidential candidate, Mr. Biden denied an accusation by Tara Reade, a former Senate staff member, that he assaulted her while working in his office in 1993. Mr. Biden and his aides said the claims were false.

The Democrats dominating the New York State Assembly have begun an impeachment investigation into the behavior of Cuomo’s office, as well as his administration’s handling of Covid-19 in nursing homes.

Federal prosecutors have requested data on nursing home deaths and are interested in producing a July Health Department report on how Covid-19 affected those facilities, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Cuomo has said he is cooperating with the federal investigation.
