Ben Simmons has been one of the most unique players in the NBA in recent years thanks to his skill set. While technically a point guard, Simmons is built like a big man and gets most of his buckets by getting people moving. He’s been constantly criticized for his lack of shooting skills, but even with this in mind, Simmons is considered a top-tier player throughout the NBA.

Last night, Simmons and his Sixers lost to the Portland Trailblazers by a score of 118-114, although Simmons was praised for his defense over Damian Lillard. After the game, Simmons was asked about his defense, where he ended up making some pretty bold claims that surprised some.

According to Ben Simmons:

“I take pride in defending the best player on the court every night. It’s not something unique. If you look at me, I’m usually defending the best player, and usually the best players are shooting guards or guards, point guards, whatever. And that to me. I love the fact that my teammates can look at me and say ‘you have to go out and lock this guy up’.

“There are nights when the guys go away. That’s going to happen. But most of the time, I feel like I’m doing a good job and making the right plays. I feel like I’m the best defender in the NBA.”

A proclamation like this will always come with a bit of scrutiny, although you can’t help but appreciate Simmons for being self-confident. The 76ers are looking great this season, and if Simmons keeps his game, they have a real shot at winning the title.
