Bellator 257 Results, Highlights: Vadim Nemkov Overtakes Phil Davis to Retain Title and Advance to Grand Prix

Vadim Nemkov and Phil Davis were no strangers arriving at the Bellator 257 main event on Friday night. Nemkov outpointed Davis by split decision in their first meeting in 2018. He entered the rematch as Bellator light heavyweight champion and once again outpointed Davis by a decision victory, retaining his championship and advancing to the semifinals of the World Grand Prix. Light Heavyweight.

In the week leading up to the event, Davis had promised to use his fight throughout the fight, a weapon that had helped him win the third round of the first encounter with the Russian champion. Instead, Davis committed himself to a surprising battle, and that decision was ultimately his undoing, as Nemkov was quicker on the hit and far more accurate in every round.

Nemkov worked behind a stiff jab that he used to establish clean rights over the head. With Davis content to back off and allow Nemkov to lead, the champion chose his spots to connect with his punches and out of harm’s way while building a scorecard lead through pressure and pace.

“It’s very difficult to knock out Phil Davis, so I was preparing for a five-round fight,” Nemkov said after fighting five full rounds for the first time in his career. “I knew it was going to go to the end.”

Nemkov connected with a strong flurry in the second round, briefly knocking down Davis, who tried to respond with one of the fight’s few takedown attempts. But Nemkov was able to break through, effectively closing off any chance that Davis would try again to force the fight onto the court.

After five rounds, it seemed clear that Nemkov had done enough to advance through the tournament and land the first successful defense of his title. Final scores were closer than expected, with Nemkov retaining his title by unanimous scores of 48-47.

In the co-main event of the night, Corey Anderson scored a huge victory, advancing to the semi-finals of the tournament with a TKO victory over Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov. With the victory, Anderson moves on to face former champion Ryan Bader.

Nemkov will meet his semi-final opponent on May 7 when Yoel Romero meets Anthony Johnson in the final quarterfinal fight of the tournament.
