The Museum of Fine Arts (MSK) in Ghent The public prosecutor's office carried out a search at the Museum of Fine Arts (MSK) in Ghent. This has been confirmed by the cabinet of ships of Culture Annelies Storms (sp.a) . Also in the cabinet of the ships a search was made. The research is part of the 26 loans of Russian avant-garde art, which until recently could be seen in the museum. The parquet of East Flanders gives no comment at present, a c ollectief of art dealers has filed a criminal complaint.
After the city of Ghent stopped the loan agreement on 21 February, owner Igor Toporovski came to pick up his work again. Today, the public prosecutor has carried out a search because it suspects that ex-director Catherine de Zegher has still withheld documents. The documents could show the authenticity of the controversial Toporovsky collection
On the weekly closing day of the museum, the public prosecutor's office sealed computers and requested documents. The museum has always maintained that it had carefully screened the loans and that the owner could submit the necessary documents and certificates to prove the provenance of the works.
In early March, MSK director Catherine de Zegher had to resign temporarily take after persistent criticism of an exhibition with works of art from the Toporovsky collection. They may not be authentic. An interim director would take over her duties, but she has not yet been appointed.
It is clear that the audit commissioned by Ghent city authorities to screen Catherine de Zegher's preliminary investigation is temporarily sidetracked by the house searches. "All documents on which they have to base themselves are confiscated," says mayor Termont. He insists on waiting for the judicial investigation and the audit to judge the fate of the suspended MSK director Catherine de Zegher. "That woman's trial has already been made for public opinion," thinks Termont
In the city council of Ghent, the opposition asked more about the months-long criticism of the MSK tonight, after doubting about the authenticity of the works. Mayor Termont asked the municipal councilors not to ask for details from the judicial investigation. The public prosecutor's office also provided little additional information on Monday.
In the meantime, Vessels Storms is opposed to criticism from the Ghent opposition. "We are always confronted with new elements," she says. "It is easy to say afterwards what someone has to do."
Ernst & Young is going to screen MSK
Earlier it became known that Ernst & Young was screening the Museum of Fine Arts at the request of the city of Ghent. The company will investigate whether the MSK has followed the international guidelines on loan, and whether the museum has acted in accordance with international reference practices. Interviews with staff from the MSK and representatives from a number of internationally recognized reference museums are also available.
The director of the MSK, Catherine De Zegher, was also thrown aside as a director last week. She remains suspended until the external audit provides clarity
Collective of art dealers has filed a criminal complaint "( lawyer)
In the meantime it has also become known that the lawyers of a collective of international art dealers and a relative of an artist have filed a criminal complaint with a civil party count in the case of the Toporovsky collection in the Ghent MSK, according to lawyer Geert Lenssens.
According to Lenssens, the prosecution's investigation follows the complaint that his clients, four art dealers and someone who manages the artistic heritage of a well-known artist, had previously submitted to the investigating magistrate in Ghent. " the art market and museum world are damaged, and are assisted by experts ", Lenssens explains.
