Beavers sweep BYU on a walk

CORVALLIS, Mineral. By Jacob Melton The starting single sent the Oregon State baseball team to a 4-3 victory and swept BYU Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

Kyle froemke opened the ninth with a ride, went to the second in a Wade meckler touch of sack and then to the third when Preston jones played by a solo. Melton then drove a 3-1 pitch from BYU reliever Drew Zimmerman to the left, leading Froemke for the game-winning run.

The RBI capped a day out of 2 out of 4 for the Medford native. He drove in three of the Beavers’ four runs; his first two came with a single in the fifth inning and a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.

Froemke doubled OSU’s first race of the day (10-1 overall) at home with a double in the fifth that tied the game at one.

BYU, which scored first in the fourth, was up 3-2 on a two-run homer by Joshua Cowden in the seventh. OSU, however, tied the game with a Melton sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning.

Jake mulholland picked up the win after throwing a scoreless ninth; he’s 1-0 this season. BYU (3-8) reliever Tyson Heaton was charged with the loss and is 0-1.

Melton and Justin boyd each had two hits to set the pace for the state of Oregon; the beavers finished with nine in total.


Oregon State hosts Oregon starting Friday in a three-game non-conference series at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The first pitch on Friday is scheduled for 5:35 pm Pacific Time. Nothing in the first, again
Jake pfennigs came out of a jam in the first, leaving the runners stranded in first and second thanks to a late-inning foul on the receiver Troy claunch. That kept BYU off the board in the first. OSU opponents have yet to score a run in the first inning of this season.

The bullpen on the weekend

The Oregon State bullpen held BYU to just two hits and two runs in 13 innings during the three-game series. The ‘pen walked seven and struck out 18.

General release

Oregon State struck out 37 batters in 27 innings against BYU. OSU staff limited the Cougars to 13 hits and six runs, five earned, for a 1.67 ERA in the three-game series.

11 minute delay

The game was delayed 11 minutes in the sixth inning due to rain.
