PHILADELPHIA – The Atlanta Braves looked a bit like a mosaic in their second game of the season.
The All-Star patch that appeared on the right sleeve of the Braves jerseys on Opening Day was sewn on Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. The same logo also disappeared from their hats.
The uniform change came a day after Major League Baseball announced that this summer’s All-Star Game would be moving from Atlanta due to the sport’s objections to sweeping changes in Georgia’s voting laws.
The change in the jersey was easy to spot, with the outline of the All-Star patch noticeably covered. The Braves still have a patch on the left sleeve marking the franchise’s 150th anniversary.
The summer event was scheduled for July 13 at Truist Park in Atlanta.
“I’m disappointed that he’s not going to be there,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said before the 4-0 loss. “But I’m focused on playing baseball and what we have to do this season. Aside from being disappointed, that’s all I have to say about it.”
Said Atlanta pitcher Charlie Morton, in his fourteenth season in the majors: “It’s about more than the guys in the clubhouse. It’s about the city of Atlanta, the state of Georgia, the Braves organization. , people coming from all over the country and businesses in the area are experiencing a boost. ”
“I’m disappointed in the Braves organization and the locals who would have benefited from seeing the influx of business and the excitement in the area. It’s a bad situation. Some of the guys who will probably be on the team would have.” It was nice representing the team in their stadium. People could have seen what was done in the stadium, “he said.
“Other than that, I don’t know what to say about it. It just sucks,” he said.
No new site for the game has been announced.
MLB said the All-Star festivities will still feature a planned tribute to the late Braves Hall of Famer Hank Aaron, a civil rights hero. Houston manager Dusty Baker, who played with Aaron in Atlanta, and several others have suggested that the event take place in Milwaukee. Aaron began his career with the Milwaukee Braves and ended with the Milwaukee Brewers.
“I think the majors made a good decision,” said Brewers manager Craig Counsell, adding that he would like to see the game played in Milwaukee.
“Absolutely. I think it would be exciting for the city, for sure,” he said. “It’s not a good thing for the city of Atlanta and some folks who have missed out on some economic opportunities, but if it’s going to be somewhere else, it would be exciting for the city to have it here. ”
Commissioner Rob Manfred made the decision to move the All-Star Game and events, along with the amateur draft, from Atlanta after discussions with individual Major League Baseball players and the Players Alliance, an organization of black players formed after George’s death. Floyd last year.
“This all came together pretty quickly,” said Chicago Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward, who is black. “We had, I think, one day left in spring training. The Players Alliance, we got together and we got as many people together as we could on one call. There were probably less than 50 men out of 100 or whatever. We had our conversation.
“We knew how we felt about it. We wanted to make sure, I think, that whatever happened, the decision was made, that we were there to do what we could in Atlanta,” he said.
