Astronomers observe the death of a distant galaxy for the first time

Astronomers, for the first time, saw the death of a distant galaxy, which they describe as a “truly true event”.

When all the stars in the galaxy die, and new ones are not formed, the galaxy ceases to exist. This happens when all the gases in the galaxy are ejected, making it impossible for new stars to form.

According to a study published on Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy, scientists were “thrilled” to be able to catch this rare event using the Atacama Large Millimeter / Submillimeter Array in Chile.

It has taken nearly nine billion years for light from the starburst galaxy ID2299 to reach Earth. Therefore, when astronomers saw it coincidentally, they looked at the universe because it was only 4.5 billion years old.

Astronomers say that ID2299 is suffering more than 10,000 gas losses every year – rapidly decreasing fuel is needed to create new stars. This staggering release of gas appears to be the result of the two galaxies colliding violently and merging together to form ID2299.

The galaxy is also currently forming stars at hundreds of times faster than the Milky Way – using its remaining precious gas supplies. Because of this, ID2299 is expected to die in relatively tens of years.

“This is the first time we have observed ‘death’ of a specific giant star-forming galaxy in the distant universe due to the rejection of a giant cold gas,” lead author Anagrazia Pugliesi said in a statement.

Astronomers believe the phenomenon is a result of the merger of galaxies because they were able to witness a rare “tidal tail”, usually faint to see in distant galaxies. This long stream of stars and gas, astronomers suggest, is a direct result of galactic mergers.

He only observed the galaxy for a few minutes, but it was enough to see the tail of the elusive tides.

Emanuel Daddi, co-author of the study, says, “Our study suggests that mergers can produce gas expulsion and that the winds and tails of the tides can look very similar.” “This can help us modify our understanding of how galaxies die.”

If astronomers are correct that the merger has caused a huge loss of gas, they will need to rethink theories before galaxies are created and develop – and how they die. Other theories have suggested that wind from active black holes or intense star structures are responsible for such deaths.

“The study of this single case revealed the possibility that this type of phenomenon may not be unusual at all and that this ‘removal of gravitational gas’ has led to many galaxies, which incorrectly included previous observations. Gone, ”co-authored Dr. Said Jerian Fensch.
