The moon could already have structures that can house the astronauts.

The lunar NASA scientist, Dr. Daniel Moriarty, suggested that the lava tubes (tunnel-shaped caves) on the surface of the moon could adapt to a base.

US President Donald Trump announced in March that he wanted to launch a lunar mission by 2024, which means that NASA will have to resolve things soon.

Dr. Moriarty said in a session of Reddit "ask me anything": "I do not think we can change the surface of the moon much".

"Instead, I think it makes sense to work within some of the structures and resources that already exist.

"For example, it could be useful to establish a base near a polar region permanently shaded to take advantage of the surface water that is there.

"Alternatively, it might be interesting to set up a tent inside a pre-existing lava tube, which could provide the astronauts with some protection against temperature variations and incoming solar radiation."

He believes that NASA will take advantage of the natural structures that are currently on the moon.
