Although Apple is investing in new movies and shows for its streaming service Apple TV +, the platform is still considered a major success. Unexpectedly, Apple TV + was not the most popular streaming service of the quarter, but the platform was actually the last in the ranking with a market share of only 3% in the US. Apple TV + also lagged behind NBCUniversal’s streaming service introduced in July last year, which recorded 6% market share during the quarter.
Netflix is leading the market share of streaming platforms in the US with 31%, but Amazon Prime Video is growing and closing with 22%. Hulu comes with 14% and Disney + 13%, followed by HBO Max with 9% market share. Apple TV + was followed by Peacock, both HBO Max and Disney +.
While Justwatch did not comment on why Apple TV + is struggling to gain a high market share, it is no secret that Apple had a difficult year in 2020 because of the COVID-19 epidemic. Most of the construction was interrupted. As Apple TV + has only original movies and shows, the catalog is remarkably small compared to its competitors.
Apple last week extended the Apple TV + trial period for customers who already had a 1-year free trial. These users will be able to enjoy Apple TV + for free until July 2021, with the benefit first ending in February.
