Apple, the world’s most valuable company, is currently under attack Fortnite The developer Epic Games in an incredible legal and cultural battle, but was hardly the first to accuse Apple of misusing monopolistic power.
Today, Spotify – the music service whose complaints helped launch two official EU antitrust investigations into Apple’s App Store and Apple Pay practices – Apple announced an all-in-one subscription bundle, including its rival Apple Music Huh.
Here’s Spotify’s statement:
Once again, Apple is using its dominant position and behaving inappropriately to favor and deprive consumers of its own services. We call on competition officials to take immediate action to stop Apple’s anti-competitive behavior, which, if left unchecked, will cause irreparable damage to the developer community and our collective freedom to listen, learn, create and connect Will threaten
While it certainly reads like a boilerplate rather than saying something new, it sounds vaguely admirable some If the overall bundle sounds like a good deal, people can pick up Apple Music instead of Spotify, and Apple certainly has the marketing power to push that bundle harder.
That said, Spotify is no stranger to its own bundles: it’s bundled with Hulu, with AT&T cellular service and with some Samsung phones.
Meanwhile, Apple insists that its customers will still “be able to explore and enjoy the options”:
Customers can discover and enjoy each of Apple’s service options. We are introducing Apple One because it is a great value for customers and is a simple way to access Apple’s full range of subscription services. We would recommend the Apple One plan, which saves the most money based on the membership you already have. It is perfect for all those who love any of our services and want to get more for less, and this is especially great for families. In addition, select services included in Apple One are available to enjoy on non-Apple devices, and you can cancel anytime.
Last June, Apple announced that Apple Music had 60 million subscribers, but Spotify had a way to catch up to 100 million. This June, Spotify passed 138 million subscribers.
