Animal Crossing’s Sanrio amiibo launch was a disaster

Eager Animal Crossing players hoping to get Target’s exclusive Sanrio Amiibo cards were left empty-handed. Things seemed to be working properly when the sale started on schedule, but errors and out-of-stock alerts affected the entire promotion.

Animal Crossing Sanrio cards are listed as store pickup only, which means you will have to order online and then go to a Target store to claim them. The sale opened at 6 a.m. PT, and the errors began almost as soon as the sale opened. Some stores were showing limited stock, but even after half an hour, the stores that were giving payment errors were still listing the cards as in stock. As the day progressed, many have chosen to list it as sold out.

Fans on social media and the Animal Crossing subreddit weren’t happy. Many recounted their experiences with instant sales, while at least one suggested calling your local Target to put a pack of cards aside and then just hit the store, bypassing in-store pickup entirely. The product itself has earned an average rating of 1.6 stars at the time of publication.

Sanrio cards have been available in Japan and Europe since 2017, as a link to Animal Crossing: New Leaf. This is the first time the card game has been available in the US, and it unlocks villagers and items themed with popular Sanrio characters in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
