For Halloween 2017 on Tuesday, the “Today” show embraced a country music theme. Costumes included Billy Ray Cyrus, Blake Shelton, Shania Twain and Dolly Parton. Watch the video below!
As Gossip Cop has reported, the “Today” show crew takes Halloween quite seriously each year. With weeks, and sometimes months, of advance planning, the co-hosts often follow a theme that has their costumes relating to one another. Last year, for example, the “Today” show threw it back to the 1990s for its Halloween celebration, with the co-hosts all dressing as iconic pop culture figures from the decade, such as Jerry Seinfeld and, well, Kathie Lee Gifford. In an amusing twist, Hoda Kotba impersonated her co-star, while Gifford herself took on Regis Philbin. And in 2015, the group memorably went as the gang from Peanuts, with Al Roker as Charlie Brown and Matt Lauer as Lucy.
This time around, the festivities began with a pre-taped message from Reba McEntire saying they’d be celebrating beloved country music stars for “Legends Night” at the Grand Ole Opry. Introducing them one by one, Carson Daly took on Billy Ray Cyrus, unexpectedly joined by the real singer, for a performance of “Achy Breaky Heart.” Roker came out of a smoke-filled car singing “On The Road Again” as Willie Nelson. Shania Twain followed, as portrayed by Megyn Kelly. This marked the first time Kelly participated in the annual event, since she’s a new co-host, and she was later surprised by the real Twain. “I would’ve practiced more if I knew you were going to be here,” Kelly cracked.
Kotb amusingly dressed as Blake Shelton and sang “Honey Bee,” joined by Shelton himself. Jokes about “The Voice” ensued, leading to the reveal that Gifford was depicting Miley Cyrus for “Party in the U.S.A.” When Savannah Guthrie came out as Kenny Rogers, it was no surprise that Matt Lauer followed as Dolly Parton. “Somehow they convinced me to dress as a woman one more time,” he quipped. He vowed this would be the “last” time. He then announced, “But believe me, this is not the big surprise.” And it wasn’t. It was then revealed Shelton would be playing a special Halloween concert.
