Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz announced his resignation

Berkowitz, who is married, announced his resignation in a statement read by his chief of staff, Jason Bockenstad: “It is with profound sorrow and humility that I resign as Mayor of the Municipality of Anchorage, “The statement stated.

“My resignation results from unacceptable personal conduct, which has compromised my ability to execute my duties with the attention and confidence that is required.”

As the statement read, the assembly crowd continued to create uproar until Assembly Speaker Felix Rivera asked them to stop. According to the statement Birkwitz will be the mayor on Friday, October 23 at 6 pm.

According to the city’s charter, the Legislative Speaker will take over as acting mayor, Rivera said.

However, in 10 days before the resignation of the mayor the assembly can regroup and elect a new chair.

During Tuesday’s meeting, Assemblyman Jamie Ellard made a motion for reorganization, but that proposal 8–3 failed.
