An American Airlines flight attendant had to get five stitches after an emotional-support animal bit him

(CNN) – An emotional support dog bit an American Airlines flight attendant on Monday, which resulted in an injury that required five stitches.

The incident occurred on flight 3506 from Dallas to Greensboro, North Carolina, operated by its partner Envoy Air, American Airlines said.

The medical staff examined the assistant when the plane arrived. He did not require treatment and received authorization to return to Dallas / Fort Worth, where he received five points, the airline said.

American Airlines did not say what kind of dog was involved.

"What happened on the American Airlines flight yesterday is completely unacceptable and inexcusable," the hostess union said in a statement on Tuesday. "For years, AFA has supported the role that trained animals can provide to passengers in the cabin, but we have also called for measures to be taken regarding setting standards for emotionally supportive animals."
American Airlines last updated its policy of emotional support for animals in March. For service animals, the airline allows miniature dogs, cats and horses. Emotional support animals must be dogs or cats.

Passengers who want to board an emotional support animal must provide a veterinary health form and immunization details.
