American Airlines plans to return the Boeing 737 Max for service to passenger flights by the end of the year.

The airline said on Sunday that the return dates are “highly dependent” on the recast from the Federal Aviation Administration. Max had been grounded worldwide since March 2019, killing 364 people in two accidents.

American said that after being certified, it would phase in the 737 Max, starting with a 737 Max flight a day between Miami and New York, which would begin from December 29 to January 4. It will also consider expanding flights beyond that time period.

“We remain in contact with the FAA and Boeing on the certification process and we will continue to update our plans,” the company said in a statement.

The airline said the new flight slate will be available for booking by October 24 and customers will be made aware that they will be flying on Max.
