Amazon Prime subscription increases to $ 12.99 per month | News and opinion

That's $ 2 per additional month, so a monthly subscription makes even less financial sense.

Amazon Prime is becoming more expensive for monthly subscribers.

Amazon today raised the Prime price from $ 10.99 per month to $ 12.99. The price of an annual subscription is still $ 99, so there are no changes there. Meanwhile, Prime Student now costs $ 6.49 a month, an increase of $ 5.49. The price of an annual Prime Student subscription remains the same at $ 49.

Prime offers two-day free shipping on Amazon.com purchases; unlimited access to Prime Video, Prime Music and Prime Reading; unlimited storage of photos through Prime Photos; discounts on games; early access to Amazon's Lightning Deals; and special discounts at Whole Foods.

The online retail giant is likely to try to push users into their annual Prime plan, which has always been a better business for those who plan to stay with the service for a while.

Now, a monthly subscription has even less financial sense. If you are in the monthly plan and end up staying with Prime for one year, you will pay almost $ 156.

Amazon notifies affected subscribers of this change by email.

"Prime offers a unique combination of shipping, shopping and entertainment benefits, and we continue to invest in making Prime even more valuable to our members," Amazon wrote in the message. The company even said that it now offers 100 million items with Prime shipping for two days, and same-day and one-day deliveries in more than 8,000 cities and towns.

"We also continue to present popular and award-winning Prime Originals, such as The Grand Tour Sneaky Pete and the Golden Globe winner The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel all included with Prime Video, "the company wrote.

If you're new to Prime, you can try it for free for 30 days to see if you like it. To address an existing Prime membership, visit your Manage Amazon Prime Membership page .
