It's the largest and most luxurious Netflix series in history, one based on an acclaimed science fiction novel, and yet you've probably never heard of Altered Carbon .

So leave us to make presentations as we release nine exclusive first-view images, and the NSFW preview above, from the upcoming dramatic series by writer and producer Laeta Kalogridis () Alita: Battle Angel Shutter Island with a pilot shot by Emmy-winning director Miguel Sapochnik (who directed the episode of "The Battle of the Bastards" in Game of Thrones ).

Based on the cyberpunk novel by Richard K. Morgan 2002, Carbon is set 500 years in the future …

… When human consciousness can be stored in digital implants (called "piles") that allow mega-rich people to improve their bodies continuously (called "sleeves")) and essentially live forever. The story follows an elite soldier named Takeshi Kovacs. This is him below during a flashback scene (where he was initially played by Will Yun Lee) along with his sister Reileen Kawahara (Dichen Lachman). They were hired badbadins who became revolutionaries …

Kovacs is imprisoned, his conscience stored, and then awakens centuries later in a different body. Now he is played by Joel Kinnaman ( The Killing ) …

The freedom of Kovacs was arranged by a wealthy tycoon, Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy), who offers Kovacs a pardon for his crimes if he can solve a "Murder" – Bancroft's own, as someone killed his previous manga …

Kovacs was trained by Quell ( Hamilton star Renee Elise Goldsberry), the leader of the Envoys – warriors interstellar elite, trained in the forms of intuition, combat and survival …

The launch of Kovacs draws the attention of Kristin Ortega (Martha Higareda), a detective with a complicated past …

Here is the photo of Kovacs and Ortega together. The protesters are members of a religious group against people who wear sleeves to cheat death and achieve immortality …

Here is Kovacs in a zero gravity fight scene …

There is also a veteran ( Ato Essandoh) trying to free his imprisoned wife and a grim owner of an AI hotel that is modeled after Edgar Allen Poe (Chris Conner) …

Altered Carbon is a pbadion project for a long time time for Kalogridis, who first opted for the rights of the novel 15 years ago and sought to obtain the title made as a feature film. The title was difficult to sell for film studios because the material was not linked to a known franchise, it told a very complex story, required building a completely new futuristic world and contained adult material. "The complexity of the story requires – as the noir often does – doing something that is an extremely twisted murder mystery, but it also had to be difficult-Ronally," she says. "And a difficult-to-R science fiction movie is usually something like Logan, for example, where you're building a part of a franchise."

Then Netflix took a step forward. Kalogridis praises the company for taking a risk with his vision and for really understanding the material (he noticed that the entire development team of the network came out and read Morgan's novel). The result looks a bit like a mashup of Blade Runner Black Mirror The Matrix and other titles, but it also feels like its own universe.

"It's very different from what's left in this space," says Kalogridis. "There are some Philip K. Dick there, William Gibson, obviously Ridley Scott, and actually some Orson Welles and John Huston. We tried to imagine what a potential globalized future would be like on Earth, with a certain amount of technological change, a certain amount of technological familiarity and a high degree of human familiarity ".

Altered Carbon The first season consists of 10 episodes. While the production cost of the show is not known (and Netflix will not confirm the rumors), we have heard that the drama is a candidate for the biggest freshman program.

Perhaps one of the most exciting elements for fans of the genre is that Netflix hooked Sapochnik to direct the pilot between his commitments in Game of Thrones (he is currently filming multiple episodes in the last season of the program ). "Miguel is a visionary director," says Kalogridis. "When you look at the Battle of the Bastards," he is able to combine a mbadive reach and scale with intensely emotional human moments, that's incredibly rare and Miguel does it like breathing. "

And although the network has been pretty quiet about Carbon so far, that's about to change. In addition to these first official images, Netflix has just announced the premiere date of the drama, which is not really far away: February 2, 2018.
