The field of university football playoffs is established.

Clemson is the No. 1 seed and will play No. 4 Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

Oklahoma is the No. 2 seed and will face No. 3 Georgia in the Rose Bowl.

the Tigers enter as defending champions after crushing Miami (Florida) in the ACC title game. The Crimson Tide defeated Big Ten champion Ohio State for the last place despite not winning its SEC division.

This is the first time that two teams from the same conference have arrived in the field. It is also the second consecutive season in which a team that did not play in a conference championship game was selected.

"We do not look at the conference membership," Kirby Hocutt, chairman of the American Football University tie-break committee, after the announcement. "We see the four best teams."

This will be the third consecutive meeting in the tie-break between Clemson and Alabama. They played in the last two games of the championship with the Tide winning in 2015 and the Tigers winning in 2016.

The Sooners and Bulldogs secured their places with the respective victories of the championship games of the conference in the Big 12 and SEC . The two teams have never played.

Clemson, Oklahoma and Alabama are making repeated appearances in the field. The trio along with Ohio State has represented 11 of the 16 berths in the four-year systems. This is the first time that Georgia has been selected.

Both semifinal games will be played on January 1.

The winners will face each other in the college football championship game on January 8 in Atlanta.
