A motorcyclist opened fire on a taxi at William Nicol Drive near Sandton, killing one passenger and seriously injuring another on Thursday afternoon.
Police said the taxi, which had three passengers and a driver inside, was traveling on the busy road when the motorcycle that was traveling behind them opened fire.
Police spokeswoman Sergeant Juliet Mogale said a passenger in the back seat was shot and killed while another passenger, who was sitting in front of the vehicle, was also shot. The driver and the third passenger were not injured in the shooting, but were traumatized by the ordeal they had experienced, he said.
The motorcyclist is still a fugitive, and a case has been opened at the Sandton police station.
Netcare 911 paramedics said one of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to a nearby hospital.
