BJP leader and minister of justice Ravi Shankar Prasad said the congress was “political” about the sensitive issue of violence in Delhi, while there is a need for all to talk collectively about restoring peace, friendship and harmony.
“Sonia Gandhi ji, please do not preach rajdharma to us. You are full of his violation and twists for clear and simple voting policy. Congress must look at his face in the mirror of rajdharma,” he said.
‘Rajdharma’ means broadly the fulfillment of legitimate duties by a government with impartiality towards everyone.
The BJP leader stated that former prime ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi had accelerated the citizenship of refugees from Uganda and Sri Lanka respectively.
At a press conference he noted that Manmohan Singh, as leader of the Rajya Sabha congress, had asked the then Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani to grant citizenship to persecuted minority refugees from neighboring countries such as Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The then Rajasthan Prime Minister Ashok Gehlot, who is currently also at the helm of the state, had also looked for it.
“Sonia ji tell us what kind of ‘rajdharma’ this is that everyone has backed down? What we did to your government wouldn’t be able to do it in 10 years … If Congress does something, it’s okay. But if we do the same do, they provoke people. What kind of “rajdharma” is this? “Prasad asked.
Congress closed the BJP for its comments and stated that its leaders such as Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Manmohan Singh believed in equality and harmony, while the Modi government has a “division.”
“Indira ji, Rajiv ji, rajdharma of Manmohan Singh was about giving priority to equality and harmony. There is prejudice in what you do. There is a division,” the congress said on the official Twitter handle.
Prasad’s claim that the exercise of the National Population Register was started in 2010 by the UPA government led by Congress, the spokesperson for the opposition party Abhishek Singhvi said the NPR and the National Register of Citizens are linked to the additional questions that the Modi dispensation adds to the NPR.
Spokesperson for the congress Randeep Surjewala also talked to the BJP about Prasad’s comments on NPR and asked why he is not implementing it in Bihar.
The BJP-JD (U) speaks one language in Bihar and another in Delhi, he said.
The Bihar meeting recently adopted a unanimous resolution against the NRC and a new NPR format.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has claimed that his government has not talked about bringing in the NRC.
Both parties struggled one day after Congress President Sonia Gandhi led a party delegation to President Ram Nath Kovind and urged him to force the NDA-led NDA government to follow “rajdharma.”
Prasad said that Sonia Gandhi and other party leaders “incited” people to the CAA and never spoke against objectionable remarks, including Modi and cutting off Assam from the rest of India, made by some anti-CAA protesters.
He also reiterated the BJP’s accusation that the violence in Delhi was the result of “incitement” by convention leaders, including Sonia, Priyanka, and Rahul Gandhi.
Sonia Gandhi has called for “aar par ki ladai” (fighting to end) during a rally against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in December 2019.
He accused the Congress of conducting politics about the violence in Delhi, which has killed 42 people so far, he said the party has not forgotten the defeat in the latest polls of Lok Sabha and its family and political interest above national interested.
