Adams County Sheriff’s Deputy Shot to Death, One Suspect in Custody and Two Still Released – The Denver Post

THORNTON – An Adams County sheriff's officer was shot dead on Wednesday night in Thornton, and a suspect was taken into custody, a sheriff's spokeswoman said. Authorities are still searching for two other suspects, and urged residents to stay inside and protect themselves from doors and windows.

The officer was shot by a suspect who fired several bullets while being chased, a sheriff's spokeswoman told a news conference. The deputy was taken to Denver Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Law enforcement officers from across the metropolitan area have met at the hospital for a procession.

Security forces had established a large perimeter, and SWAT teams, Aurora police and canine units were collaborating in the search. The police were flooding the area with light while searching for the attackers.

The Adams County Sheriff's Office reported shortly after 8 p.m. that a deputy was below.

The shooting occurred less than a month after a sheriff in Douglas County was killed in the line of duty.

Govt. John Hickenlooper said: "Tonight we saw how a community was nervous and a sheriff's deputy was shot while answering a call in Adams County. We are deeply saddened to learn that the deputy has died from the injuries sustained in the shooting. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Adams County Sheriff's Office and the family and friends of the murdered deputy. "

The Adams County Sheriff's Office advised the public to avoid the East 88th Avenue and Dawson Street area and seek refuge.

KMGH-TV reported that an employee of a nearby Walmart store said that customers inside the store left and that a few employees stayed inside while the police worked to search for the suspect. The employee, who did not want to be identified, said that the shop doors were closed and that the alarm had been turned on.

Late in the afternoon, a man and a woman arrived at the Adams County sheriff's substation. He hit with an American flag on the ground, and the two left flowers. The man, who did not want to be identified, said: "We are all relatives, brothers and sisters".
