A single example of stress was found in July, but it was not rediscovered until three months later. While stress was difficult to detect in October, it began to become more prevalent over the next few months.
According to the news outlet, researchers at the Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles discovered that 24 percent of the approximately 4,500 viral samples throughout California remained stressed in the last weeks of December.
In a separate study, researchers found that 25 percent of the 332 samples taken during late December to November were of the B.1.426 strain.
“There was a domestic version under our noses,” Charles Chiu, a lab specialist at the University of California at San Francisco, told the Los Angeles Times.
Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center said the strain has five mutations, including the L342R mutation, which replaces the virus’ spike protein, which it uses to infiltrate human cells.
California deaths doubled in less than three months during the holiday season. The state has Confirmed Over 3.1 million COVID-19 cases and 36,790 deaths.
While researchers suspect that new stress was at hand in recent cases, hospitals and deaths in California, it is unclear whether it was due to other factors such as cold weather, holiday celebrations, travel and disregard for public health measures. As to what extent its outbreak worsened. Definitely played a role.
“It helped speed up the number of cases around the holiday season,” said Eric Vail, a pathologist at Cedars Sinai.
“But human behavior is the major factor in the spread of a virus, and the fact that it happened when the weather cooled down and when people gather in the middle of the holidays does not cause an accident,” he said.
Researchers say they are continuing to investigate the transmission of stress.
