LONACONING, Md. (AP) – A jackpot-winning powerball ticket was priced at $ 731.1 million, sold in a struggling coal-mining town, the hometown of baseball legend Lefty Grove, one of the greatest previous laurels, the Maryland Lottery announced Thursday.
Coney Market, a convenience store in the Allegany County town of Lonaconing, will receive a $ 100,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling tickets for the fifth largest lottery prize in American history.
It had been more than four months for someone to win the Powerball, making the game’s jackpot so big. A big mega jackpot There will be graves on Friday night.
Just the prize it will never know: Maryland is one of the states that allows winners to remain anonymous. But it can be difficult to keep quiet about such a large windmill if the ticket was purchased by a local. Lonaconing is a city of about 300 families with a poverty rate of more than 22 percent off the peat track, well above the national average.
“We’re really happy for anybody,” store owner Richard Ravenscroft told The Associated Press by phone. “We don’t know who it is yet.”
The Coney Market, which locals call its city name, is in a more than a century-old building along Route 36 in Maryland. It is a place where people can eat hamburgers and submarine sandwiches in a small seating area that regularly draws its share.
Lonaconing, a former coal mining town, does not have much money. Ravenscroft said there is still some strip mining in the area, though it is closed due to environmental concerns, and the remaining factories, a pulp and paper company, recently closed after going through a series of buyers. He said another company was coming, with plans to hire about 200 people to make wood chips.
“I can’t wait to congratulate the person. I hope whoever has won it uses it wisely and others benefit from it,” he said.
Ravenscroft, for his part, wants to expand the store’s kitchen and serve real food like mashed potatoes and gravy. Maybe the bonus can help with that.
Lonaconing’s previous biggest winners were Robert Moshe Grove, known as Lefty Grove, who pitched 17 leagues in the big leagues, nine with the Philadelphia Athletics and eight with the Red Sox. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947, and died in 1975.
The Powerball jackpot came only one day after no one won the $ 970 million Mega Millions prize, the third-largest prize in American history.
The winning numbers for Wednesday night’s powerball drawing were: 40-53-60-68-69 and a powerball of 22.
It was the first time that both lottery jackpots topped $ 700 million. The biggest prize was a $ 1.58 billion Powerball jackpot won by three people in 2016.
No one had won the jackpot since mid-September, allowing the award to rise steadily for months. Such a long stretch without a winner is rare, but represents an incredibly small margin of winning – 1 in 292.2 million for Powerball and 1 in 302.5 million for Mega Millions.
The listed awards are for the winners, who choose an annuity option, which is paid over 30 years. Most of the winners chose cash prizes, which would be $ 716.3 million for Wednesday’s Powerball and $ 546.8 million for Mega Millions. After winning the Powerball, the new jackpot has a $ 15 million cash value.
Those awards would also be subject to federal taxes, and most states would also cut it.
Both Mega Millions and Powerball are played in 45 states as well as Washington, DC and the US Virgin Islands. Powerball is also offered in Puerto Rico.
