Allen Park – Matthew Stafford has requested a trade, and the Detroit Lions will do their best to find a new home for their longtime quarterback.
A league source said Stafford approached the team about trading him after the season ended, suggesting the move might be best for both sides. The Lions have fired less than a week from introducing their new head coach and general manager, which will reportedly be a deal in the coming weeks. Detroit will not force a deal, stating that if the team gets “fair market value”, the quarterback will be left until 2021. Lions coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes were both briefed at Stafford’s request. Ink the paper.

Stafford was the No. 1 pick for Detroit in 2009 and stands as the franchise’s leader in yards (45,109), yards per attempt (7.2), touchdowns (282), completion percentage (62.6%) and just about every other record. About a lion. The quarterback can hold. Outside of Detroit, Stafford was the fifth player in NFL history to throw for 5,000 yards in a season. He was also the fastest player to reach 20,000, 25,000, 30,000 and 35,000 passing yards.
The Lions have made the playoffs three times since drafting Stafford, but there is nothing to show for any of those tries. Detroit is picking up inside the top 10 for the second straight year, turning in its third consecutive final spot in the NFC North. Stafford restarted 16 games, completing 64.2% of his passes for 4,084 yards with 26 touchdowns with 10 interceptions in 2020.
Column: Matthew Stafford is the best Lions QB ever. It still wasn’t enough, and may never be.
Detroit has Chasebacks Daniel and David Blow under contract out of Stafford for 2021. The Lions also held the seventh-overall pick in the April draft. The early mock draft tied the Lions with others, as well as Zach Wilson and Justin Fields at quarterback and that was before Stafford’s trade request.
This post will run through potential destinations and assets that can in turn go back to Detroit. See below for five trade partners that may make sense for the Detroit Lions:
There is a vacancy under center in Indianapolis after Phillip River announced his retirement last week. The Colts have their own pick of 21 in the April draft and it seems that shelving two first-round picks in two consecutive years does not leave the shelves empty.
The Colts are one of the strongest rosters in the league, with an impressive offensive line and strong defense in place. Adding a Matthew Stafford to the mix could take this team to the next level of AFC contenders. Indy gained an 11-5 lead last season and defeated the Bills 27-24 in the wild card round. The offense left much to be desired under the River and with Stafford ripping inside Lucas Oil can be seen to increase significantly.
It is worth noting that the Colts were a first-round pick in San Francisco for interior defender DeForest Buckner last year, so it is not out of the question. Louis Riddick, an ESPN analyst and recent interviewer for Detroit’s GM job, Tweeted, “(Colts GM) Chris Ballard is a smart man. He knows what to do… “
New Orleans Saints
It’s a little more there, at least until Saints quarterback Drew Breeze, 42, makes his decision whether to retire. Jameis Winston is a strong in-house candidate, but has only signed a one-year deal and does not have Stafford’s track record.
New Orleans is in indie-territory with a later first-round pick (pick 28) in terms of asking price. The Saints have better defense and several offensive weapons in place in the league. Trading for Stafford delays any negotiation of a rebuild and seems more like a safe bet than giving the key to Winston or the enigmatic Taysom Hill. The Lions hired coach On Campbell and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn through New Orleans, talking to several members of the front office during the interview process. The lines of communication between the two franchises are firmly established, and may once again come into play.
San francisco 49ers
The 49ers are in an interesting position, one year removed from a Super Bowl loss, but the picks sit with 12 after going 6-10. It is worth remembering that the New York Jets received two first-round picks for safety Jamal Adams earlier this year, so 12 picks for the 32-year-old franchise quarterback under team control for more than one season are not out of the question. looks like.
This partnership is sure to take steam as this cycle reaches offshin. In 2018 Jimmy Garpolo signed a five-year, $ 137.5 million deal. Nevertheless, 49 people can exit that marriage in a mostly harmless fashion. Garoppolo’s season was marred by two high-ankle sprains, limiting him to six starts. He has started only 16 games since the 49ers sent a second-round pick for him to New England.
San Francisco’s roster is sure to undergo some changes, but it feels ripe for kick-start after a year. The 49ers have some versatile weapons on offense in Debo Semuel and Brandon Ayuk to go with a deep running back room, not to mention tight end George Katal. Trent Williams would be an easy bet for the player of the year return, were it not for the remarkable story of Alex Smith in Washington, tightening left tackle spot for the short term. The defense may be in for an overhaul, but Jevon Kinlaw and Fred Warner live in the city, so once again there is a complete unrest in the bay.
It comes down to how much San Francisco brass feels, Staford can move Needle vs. Garrappolo. The operation may come in the hands of Kyle Shahan to put Stafford in the 49ers’ coach, where he was at the end of 2019.
Washington Football Team
Well, the current circumstances certainly present this previously obvious candidate with a little more intrigue. Former Lions general manager Martin Mayview, the man who made Stafford the No. 1 pick in 2009, was named GM of Washington earlier this week.
Washington made it to the playoffs after winning the NFC East 7-9 but fell flat in the wild card round starting with quarterback Taylor Heinike. Alex Smith, who lost his leg nearly two years ago, started six games, but faced his own uncertain future. The football team made a first round pick over Dwayne Haskins in 2019, but has already competed with the Ohio State quarterback. Haskins has since landed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, leaving Washington in his rear-view mirror.
Washington owns pick 19 in the April draft and has a stack of young defensive lineman and edge rushers. Stafford of Washington feels like it could be the most influential of them all thanks to defensive foundations and young skill positions such as Terry McLaurin and others like Antonio Gibson. With coach Ron Rivera, it is difficult not to see big things for this team and this impressive defensive front is closed.
“But when you have a franchise quarterback like Matthew Stafford, you keep the guy,” Matthew said when asked about Trading Stafford in Detroit in 2015, saying “if we have 22 Matthew Stafford , Then we will win a championship every year. “
new England Patriots
Cam Newton is unlikely to return to New England in 2021. The Patriots missed the playoffs in their first season without Tom Brady, leading to an anemic offensive effort. New England’s receiver room leaves a lot to be desired, so it will be more difficult than expected. Still, it’s hard to doubt Bill Belich and New England’s ability to reload and regain. The Patriots pick themselves up in Draft 15, which certainly seems more than enough to start the conversation.
Newton started 15 games, throwing only eight touchdowns on 10 interceptions while playing with a blank slate of skaters near New England. The quarterback added 12 scores on the ground, exposing an awkward first season outside Carolina.
An interesting aspect of this is the addition of former Lions coach Matt Patricia to the New England staff. While many will be lost in the Patricia-Stafford relationship, the former Lions coach is not the head coach, coordinator, position coach or front office. Patricia offers something that others on this list do not have, in-depth and personal knowledge of Stafford’s recent medical history. The Lions quarterback had a string of back issues and then played in 2020 through an injury to his thumb, rib cartilage and ankle. Belichick has shifted his fair share of first-round picks in his days, which could put the Patriots back. Thick of things in the AFC, so in the long run they invest in a wide receiver or three.
It seems the most unfair of them all, but the Houston Texans may be the most desperate and unpredictable team on this list. The Texans have reportedly caused some serious damage to their relationship with countryside Watson and may be forced to move all-world quarterbacks.
While many would point to Pickle’s absence in Houston, this would be a situation where Detroit would likely be sending more in return. The 25-year-old Watson is one of the fastest rising superstars in the game, out of a wildly impressive season for a franchise. As good as Stafford, it is safe to assume that Watson will command more in return, and then some.
The Texas quarterback recently signed a five-year extension, meaning that this lofty investment will be at least a long-term one. Houston also does not have a first round pick in 2020, starting a challenging rebuild, and could see the pick 7 pretty much if its hand is forced. Former Lions coach Jim Caldwell is playing for the head coaching position in Houston, adding a bit more intrigue to this potential landing spot.
