The drama of Archie Comics was originally developed in The CW.
Netflix is charting its own path to Archie Comics.
The transmission giant has delivered a considerable order of two seasons, of 20 episodes, directly to the series for an untitled drama by Sabrina based on the graphic novel by Archie Comics The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, collecting intent Riverdale companion series from The CW.
Sabrina was put into development at the young station of The CW September. A casting search to play the reinvented teenage witch started almost immediately. The sources point out that The CW and the Warner Bros. Television producers had a list of actresses who were looking for the role. That is being revised given the great commitment and move to Netflix.
Sabrina reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark tale about the coming of age that deals with horror, occultism and witchcraft. It is described as in the line of Rosemary & # 39; s Baby and The Exorcist and finds Sabrina struggling to reconcile her dual nature as a half witch, half mortal while fighting against the forces evil ones that threaten her. , his family and the world of daylight humans inhabit.
Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who also serves as chief creative officer of Archie Comics, wrote the script. Sabrina was originally viewed as a series of potential chaperones for Riverdale to broadcast in the 2018-19 television season. Aguirre-Sacasa will direct and produce along with Riverdale contributors Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater and Lee Toland Krieger. The drama comes from Warner Bros. Berlanti Productions, based on television.
Sources say that the order Sabrina is for two seasons of 10 episodes that would shoot consecutively with the first shooting from February to June. and second from June to October. The writers room opens on Monday. A release date has not been determined and it is not clear how the 20 episodes will be divided in terms of deployment.
That Netflix would invest so heavily in Sabrina should not come as a surprise. The streaming giant has SVOD rights for Riverdale teen drama noir about Archie (KJ Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Veronica (Camila Mendes), and began broadcasting the 13 episodes of the first season after of his running in The CW. Riverdale – that originally developed for Fox before moving to The CW, became a summer hit for Netflix, which in turn helped propel the show's second season in the fall. Riverdale's debut in the season of October 11 grew a huge 60 percent since its debut in the mid-season nine months earlier, which adds to the evidence of the impact that SVOD offers have in the linear audience.
"Probably more people saw it on Netflix thinking it was a Netflix program," Rick McAfee, marketing executive for CW and Rick Haskins THR in October. "Our real challenge was to take the viewers and move them to The CW."
Sabrina is the first branch of the Archie Comics universe of Aguirre-Sacasa. Before the debut of Riverdale the executive said he imagined a wider world to come out of Archie's vast mythology. "One of the good things about me being part of Archie Comics is having access to a library of 4,000 to 5,000 characters," he said. "Sabrina, the teenage witch, Josie and the Pussycats … those are characters that can easily support their own show, but we [also] have superheroes, so in success, yes, the goal is to expand in that way."
mbadive world that could come from Sabrina and Archie's world could also be attractive to Netflix. While Disney has already released Marvel movies from the streamer, Netflix is still home to a series of Marvel dramas – The Punisher, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and The Defenders ] – with many industry observers anticipating that those series could move to the next SVOD autonomous studio service.
With the Sabrina order, meanwhile, Berlanti has now made history with the most currently scripted series in the works (11). They are: CW Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning and Riverdale ; Next magic drama of ABC Deception ; NBC Blindspot ; Suspense of the Lifetime thriller series You ; and the next live action drama from DC Digital SVOD Titans.
Sabrina becomes the last series to be developed for The CW, but pbades to Netflix. Debby Ryan starrer Insatiable moved to the streamer in June after narrowly losing a series on The CW.
