A group of activists declared "independence" for the state of "New California" on Monday, in an attempt to leave the coastal enclaves of California and create a 51st state of the United States from the rest of the Golden State.
The current state of California has become ruled by a tyranny, "according to a document published by the group. The document continues (original emphasis):
Therefore, the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America 1776, the Constitution adapted in 1783 by the Congress of the United States of America, the Declaration of Independence of Alta California of 1836, the Proclamation of Sonoma 1846, and the Constitution of the State of California of 1848 Mandate of Law, Responsibility, Duty of the People who suffer the long chain of abuses and usurpations at the hands of a tyrannical government to abolish and make a New Government on the part of People and the People under GOD .
USA Today He also quotes the group as declaring: "After years of over taxation, regulation and monoparty policy, the State of California and many of its 58 counties have become ungovernable. "
A map (somewhat imprecise) of the proposed boundaries of the new state, obtained from activists by USA Today indicates that New California would be included in the entire state except the coastal region extending from the south of San Francisco Bay to the Los Angeles area The Sacramento area and the Napa Valley wine region would also be excluded and remain in the original California.
10News, ABC News affiliate San Diego, published a more extensive "declaration of independence" of the group:
The history of the current Governor and Government of California is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all of which have as their direct object the establishment of a Tyranny over the counties of New California and the State of California.
Whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to seek a constitutional remedy for the abuse of powers.
We, the people of the counties of New California solemnly publish and declare that these counties are, and of law should be, a free and independent state, that we endeavor to be free from the State of California, and that as a free State and independent, we have full power to establish and maintain law and order, to promote the general welfare and, therefore, to do all the other acts and things that a New Independent State of California can legitimately do.
We, therefore, the Representatives of the New California Counties, appeal to the California Legislature and the Federal Congress to approve resolutions to create the state of New California. And for the support of this Declaration, trusting firmly in the protection of Divine Providence, we commit ourselves mutually to our Lives, our Fortunes and our Sacred Honor.
Previous efforts to divide the state have been unsuccessful, including the state of Jefferson – a group of conservative counties in the north – and the proposed "Six Californias" referendum, which has so far been ineligible for state voting .
Left-wing Californians were enthusiastic about the idea of secession last year after President Donald Trump moved into the office, but the "CalExit" movement remains stalled.
