Alpina has never seen reason to differentiate between luxury vehicles and high-performance vehicles, and that is no less true in its latest package.
The German high-performance automaker has just unveiled a new improved BMW, the Alpina B8 Gran Coupé. The majestic car is easily the most luxurious entry in the new 8 series, and it also happens to be one of the most powerful thanks to its valiant V-8 engine.
At a glance, the Alpina B8 doesn’t look that different from the standard B8 Gran Coupe. That’s a good thing, because the hatchback is already one of the most stylish vehicles in the BMW lineup. There are some changes, of course. Both ends of the vehicle have been tuned, with a larger air intake and diffuser at the front and a spoiler at the rear. There are also special Alpina decals and badges, as well as their 21-inch, 20-spoke forged wheels, which come wrapped in high-performance Pirelli tires.
The interior has also received a subtle makeover. Almost everything, including the multifunctional front sports seats, the steering wheel and the instrument panel, is covered or accented with finely crafted Merino leather in Alpina’s in-house workshop. Behind the wheel, you’ll find a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The center console is crowned by BMW’s 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, from which you can access the navigation and driver assistance system. A Harman Kardon surround sound system also comes standard.
While the plethora of opulent accessories gives the Alpina B8 genuine luxury appeal, the beastly mill under its hood may be even more impressive. The engine is the same 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 found in the M850i and M8 models. Mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, it has been specially tuned to generate 612 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of twist. That makes it the second most powerful car in the 8 Series, behind only the M8 with the Competition package, which delivers 617 hp. It is also quite fast, capable of accelerating from zero to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and reaching a top speed of 201 mph.
The Alpina B8 Gran Coupé is expected to arrive in the United States later this spring. As well as being the most luxurious entry in the Series 8 lineup, it’s also the most expensive with a starting price of $ 140,895.
